In any case, hi everone! It’s almost midnight here and I’m hard at work. Also, this is what happened two minutes ago:
Me: I need to pull the most productive all-nighter ever, and I feel like my confidence is failing. Can you remind me that I’m a good writer, I thrive under pressure, and I can definitely do this?
Partner: I think you should go to bed and get eight hours’ sleep.

Is it Monday already?
Hello, hello! I tried to sign up a couple of weeks ago and encountered technical problems, and only now got the chance to attempt a re-register and it appears to have worked. I have been browsing this site for a while and I am so excited and invigorated by many of the articles. I am especially excited to see a science column; I am currently pursuing a graduate degree in behavioral ecology/evolutionary biology, and I really love seeing articles addressing public perception of science, activism in science, women in science, etc. Plus, book reviews? Essays? Open threads with awesome commenters? I’m excited to be a part of this community!
And this community (or at least the fraction of it that I consist of) is excited to have you. Welcome!

I just spent four days at a conference with several co-workers I barely know. They’re all like these suburban sorority moms and I’m like this alt-lifestyle nerd wearing a TARDIS dress. It was incredibly uncomfortable and I’m very glad to be home.
Yikes. Was the conference more to your taste or theirs? I hate those weekends-that-don’t-really-qualify.

Dinner tonight: leftover roasted chicken and a very limey margarita. I love being an adult.

Hey guys, if anyone’s watching the red carpet and the Oscars, we’ll be liveblogging it over here.
Anyone else have the Oscar fever? I’m ashamed to say that I’m actually watching the Red Carpet Pre-show. The pre-show! I’m going to be burnt out before the ceremony even starts.
I am watching the pre-show too, so glad to know it’s not just me. This is an excellent way for me to put off writing a report for work:) Did you see the Black Swan fashion show they just did on E? I haven’t seen the movie, but something about those models’ outfits creeped me out.
I am having a Kate Bush extravaganza over here. It is awesome.
So last night at the bar my friends and I got to talking about casting a real life version of Jem and the Holograms. We got some of the cast picked out but I need help with some more. here’s our list so far:
Jem: Lady Gaga
Kimber: Katy Perry
Shana: Rhianna
Synergy: Madonna
Pizazz: Ke$ha
Stormer: Kat Von Dee
People we need cast: Rio, Roxy, Raya, and Aja and any other characters you can think of. Your help is much appreciated!
Maybe Justin Timberlake as Rio? I can’t really remember a lot of the characters other than the ones you listed, but I think you could work in Pink and Fergie somewhere. And I could see Robert Downey Jr as Eric Raymond!

BEST NEWS!!!! I heard back and I will be allowed to submit my paper to the symposium – without having to travel to PA to do it (and miss my honeymoon with Wash)!
They will have a grad student work with me on it and the grad will be the one to present my paper on my behalf.
Oh man. I’m excited. This is one of the few things I have *just to myself* it’s not about Wash, or Cancer or that shit, this was all me.

I am such a dork–the idea of presenting a paper to a symposium makes me absolutely light-headed with glee! YAY! I’m so excited for you! Of course, I’m the dweeb who is constantly asking her instructor (who is currently working on her PhD dissertation) if she needs any help with her data analysis. :)
Oh I am excited for this. I am a very proud nerd and am already excited at the prospect of doing more research and polishing my paper.
