Now That Obama Has Decried DOMA, Republicans Are All About Job Creation Again

President Obama has finally come through for his LGBT constituents by ordering the Justice Department to stop defending The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). The Defense of Marriage Act was passed in 1996, and was one of those, “We need to protect traditional marriage AKA no gay stuff,” pieces of homophobic legislation. Naturally, now that the Prez has done something other than magically create jobs, the GOP is suddenly super-concerned with his priorities.

According to John Boehner: “While Americans want Washington to focus on creating jobs and cutting spending, the President will have to explain why he thinks now is the appropriate time to stir up a controversial issue that sharply divides the nation.”

Yes. With unemployment still at record highs, why isn’t the government spending all of its time encouraging companies to hire more people? It’s not like the GOP has spent the past two months symbolically reading the Constitution or declaring a full-blown war on women’s rights or trying to defund programs for poor people. WAIT.

At this point, the level of hypocrisy is just astounding. After weeks of the Right controlling the news cycle with their generally pro-rich-white-guys symbolic legislation, now that Obama is trying to give us some semblance of equality, we need to focus on jobs.

Unfortunately, the hypocrisy is lost on some Americans. According to one CNN.com commenter, [sic, obviously] “obama is the destroing the amercian why his has proven to be a muslin and has his own angenda now he need to take a stand on gay marrage id he stands for holy bible gay marrage is a abonamation and wrong anywhere i wont serve unless gay are out of serive”

I don’t know what that means. I think this person is threatening to not serve in the armed forces. Um, DOMA is unrelated to DADT, just to clarify for everyone. Both laws are homophobic relics of the ’90s, so I can see where people might get confused, but yeah. Separate things.

The Attorney General responded to Boehner’s comment with a five-page letter about why DOMA is technically unconstitutional (the .pdf can be viewed here). I’m pretty sure upholding the Constitution is part of Obama’s job. Just a thought, Boehner.
