Sweet Potato “Fries”

I love sweet potatoes, and if any restaurant has the option of sweet potato fries instead of regular fries, I can’t say no. That’s why I decided to try making them myself. These are baked, not fried, but the method lets them get a little browned on the outside. They do come out soft, like home fries (or British chips!). As far as I’m concerned, you could dip them in just about anything: ketchup, ranch dressing, sour cream”¦ whatever strikes your fancy.

Basically all I did was swap out sweet potatoes for regular potatoes in a recipe I already had from the Joy of Cooking. I’ve seen other recipes online that recommend tossing something sweet, such as orange juice, with the sweet potatoes as well, so that may be worth a try.  And the seasonings are entirely up to you; I used red pepper in addition to salt and black pepper just to give it a little more kick. But you can use whatever spices you like!

4 medium sweet potatoes
Toss the potatoes with:
2 tablespoons vegetable or olive oil

½ teaspoon salt
Black and red pepper to taste

  1. If you want your sweet potato fries to have a crunchy coating, toss them in egg whites (that have been whisked with a little water). Be sure to brush the pan with a fair amount of olive oil or spray well with cooking spray so they don’t stick!

*this might be the only useful thing I’ve ever learned from Oprah*

  2. Oh, the sweet potato fry. Such a joy to me. I prefer them over regular fries ANY day. My son, who is two, loves them as well.

The beauty of them is the versatility. You can bake them, shallow fry them, or deep fry them, and they’ll be perfect. You can make them savory with salt and pepper and garlic powder, or do the sweet thing and sprinkle them with sugar and cinnamon. Yum.

I also feel I should tell the public that there is a certain organic brand of frozen foods that has come out with SWEET POTATO TATOR TOTS! I believe the company is Alexia…? They specialize in frozen potato snacks that are organic. And ZOMG. Let me tell you. Nomalicious. You have to cook them a little longer than regular potato tots to get them crisp, but they taste so good.

  3. The last time I had sweet potato fries at a restaurant, they were covered with cinnamon sugar. Not bad, but not what I was expecting. I brushed off as much as I could and dipped them in ketchup. I really need to find my roll of parchment paper so I can try this. Everything sticks to my roommate’s cookie sheet, so the parchment is a necessary barrier.

  4. Sweet potatoes give me a stomach ache when they’re anything-but-fried! Actual sweet potato fries that have all the vitamin A fried out of them in a restuarant, I can handle. Idk why and it saddens me- I refused to believe it was true until the 5th instance of gastrointestinal hell-breaking-loose.

  5. I prefer to eat them sweet rather than savory. I just coat the fries in sea salt and make a marshmellow dipping sauce with some cinnamon and nutmeg in it.

I normally eat sweet potatoes cooked with brown sugar and butter rather than marshmellows, but I like my fries with it.

  6. We make these a lot, and would do it more if it wasn’t such a hassle to clean the baking trays! If you don’t mind my suggesting, we like to add a bit of cayenne pepper, cumin, paprika and coriander seed to the mix. So delicious every time!

  7. I looooooove sweet potato fries, and I make something almost identical to this on a pretty regular basis to serve as a substitute. Oh, man, are they delicious.

(Sometimes I put the oven on the broiler setting for a minute or two at the end to crisp them up once they’re cooked through.)

  8. My daughter is addicted to this stuff!!! Great recipe. But for those who think that cutting up potatoes and sticking them in the oven is too hard (my mother’s ears are ringing whereever she is) Alexis has organic frozen sweet potatoes that are to die for! Whenever they’re on sale, I pick up a shopping cart load!

  9. Aaah, yes! I knew I wanted to make burgers tonight for dinner and I was trying to think of something to go with it (I know fries is the no-duh option, but I’ve never made fries at home so it wasn’t as obvious!) So excited for some homemade sweet potato fries!
