Welcome back to 5 Books, where we help fill up your “to read” lists, one writer at a time. Tonight we have recommendations from Crystal C., longtime Persephone writer and very cool chick in general.
Which book would you give to a potential significant other?
In my dating days, High Fidelity by Nick Hornby. Guy or girl, there’s something about it that speaks to me. I think the thing that speaks to me about it most is that it’s not about finding that fairy tale romance that’s perfect. It’s about finding someone that you’re comfortable with. That makes you happy most of the time, while realizing that maybe you won’t be happy all the time. That sounds terrible, but I think it’s actually a really nice message.
Which book would you give to a high school senior?
I actually made individual journals for a couple of friends who graduated the year below me that had inspirational quotes and personal motivation messages from me interspersed in the pages. I had a lot of fun doing that.
Which book would you give to your political representatives?
Is there a book called Get Out of Politics You Terrible Person Who Looks Like Voldemort? Because I would totally give that to Rick Scott in a heartbeat.
Which book would you give to a former teacher?
Depends on what they taught. I’d love to give some of my old drama professors signed copies of their favorite plays or Shakespeare: The Invention of the Human by Harold Bloom, which is dense but amazing. You really have to be academically inclined to Wills, though, to make it through it.
Which book would you give to your best friend?
I’m just finishing Full Frontal Feminism by Jessica Valenti and it’s going to be my pass-it-around-to-everyone-I-know book soon.
