Tonight’s open thread is brought to you by my two new roommates, who weigh a total of four pounds. Of course there are pictures after the break.
This summer, I lost two of my kitties, one to a genetic heart problem and one to very old age. They passed away within a few weeks of each other, and it was horrible. I’d had the older kitty, Artemis, since I was 22, so she was there for pretty much every adventure of my adulthood. The younger one, Pixel, was a surprise when I took in a stray I thought was fat one winter. She wasn’t fat, she was pregnant, and had three kittens on my family room carpet a few weeks later. Mama Cat, who usually lives in my neighbor’s barn, took off when the kittens were weaned, leaving me with Pixel, her brother Loki and a third kitten I found a home for.
When Pixel and Artemis died, Loki stopped doing all the things he likes to do, and spent most of the time laying in his sister’s favorite spot. In the past couple of weeks, he’s started to play a little more, and I’ve been able to think about both of them without turning into a blubbery mess. Not so much while writing this, however.
Last weekend, I went to the local animal shelter and adopted two tiny kittens, and they came home last night after a layover at the spay/neuter clinic. They can’t ever replace the kitties I lost, but I fell in love with them both right away. And last night Loki played with both of them for an hour.
So without further ado or blubbering, I’d like to introduce Widget and Rue.
