It’s Doctor King’s holiday in the U.S., and one of the few national opportunities we have to publicly recognize and reflect upon the contributions of a Person of Color. For today’s LTP, we’re taking a turn for the serious so put on your thinking caps and sharpen your #2 pencils.

We talked about Dr. King in my class on human trafficking today. I thought the students would kind of zone out, but they were really engaged. Because human trafficking is the topic of my current class, it’s what I think about all the time, but the main quote that stuck out for me was “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” It’s not just about segregation and discrimination (although that is obviously important) – it’s about all humans being treated with dignity, respect, and equality.
As far as his legacy – I think it’s everywhere. The idea that masses of people can peacefully change the world – I want to live in the world that Dr. King dreams about. Some days, I feel like I do, because of his work. Some days, I feel like we can, if we all work at it.

I think we still need to realize that injustice and inequality isn’t the problem of one particular group: it belongs to us all, and we have to keep fighting until everyone can join hands as equals.
Yeah, I know, easier said than done. If my own backyard’s in order it’s hard to care about someone else’s. But it needs to be done.
