This post is about cookies, which are clearly very serious business. Therefore, I will not spin some long, convoluted tale about how these cookies taste like home and deliciousness or how hilarious it is when the dog tries to steal one (side note for people who care about dogs and are concerned about my dog eating chocolate: my dog is very large and while I do not intentionally feed him chocolate, it is not terrible for him if he steals some every now and then). Let’s get straight to the recipe:
What you need:
¼ cup applesauce
1 cup margarine
1 cup packed light brown sugar
½ cup white sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 ¼ cups flour
½ teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
3 cups oats
1 cup chocolate chips
What you do:
Preheat the oven to 325° F. Cream the margarine and sugars until they are silky smooth. Add in the applesauce and the vanilla. In a separate bowl, mix all of the dry ingredients together except for the oats and chocolate chips, if you’re being a stickler about what the dry ingredients are. Then, mix the dry and wet ingredients together and then add the oats one cup at a time. Otherwise, it is just a pain in the tuchas to stir it all together. Then, add those tasty chocolate chips.
Get heaping teaspoons of the dough and drop ‘em like they are soon going to be hot onto an ungreased baking sheet. Pop them in the oven for 10-12 minutes.

Duuuuuude, finally someone who understands that CHOCOLATE CHIPS belong in oatmeal cookies, not raisins, which are the devil’s shriveled fruit.
Oatmeal and chocolate chips go together, well, LIKE OATMEAL AND CHOCOLATE CHIPS. They are a perfect pair.
Raisins are evil incarnate. Butterscotch chips or cinnamon chips are also fantastic in oatmeal cookies. Or walnuts. Damn, now I want a cookie!
The horrible disappointment when you realize you just bit into a raisin instead of a chocolate chip.
vaguely off-topic, but recently acquired a new boyfriend who is vegan (i am not) so i am trying to collect recipes for things I can bake for him and i’m super stoked to try this out. But I was under the impression that margerine was not vegan, cuz of the whey in it? Am I totally off base? Is it just not vegan in Canada due to reglations or something?
Either way, I shall find a substitude and bake this mofo cookies cuz oatmeal choc chip are my favourite of all time.
I don’t know about things in Canada, but in the US, we have margarine with whey in it and margarine without whey in it. You just have to check the labels. I use a brand with no whey in it, just vegetable oil goodness.
