What I Watched Last Night: “The Legend of Korra”

Listen up, Persephoneers! Let me tell you about The Legend of Korra.

What is it you say? Well, The Legend of Korra is an animated series on Nickelodeon. It takes place 70 years after the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Quick basics: there are benders in this universe — people who are born with the ability to manipulate one of the four elements, which are Fire, Earth, Air, and Water. The Avatar is master of all four elements and their job is to keep the world in harmony. I know that it doesn’t sound like much, but trust me, this series is worth it. It is smart, funny and has some great dramatic moments, like most great television shows. But the best part is that it has an awesome female lead!

Look at her! She is awesome!

The avatar can be anyone, male or female, and in this series, it’s Korra, a 17-year-old girl from the southern water tribe. And she’s not a perky blonde girl! Do you realize how different that is? What animated show do you know that has amazing minority females as their leads on the air right now? I can’t come up with any right now. That means little boys and little girls everywhere are seeing a strong representation of a non-white female.

Korra taking out THREE benders during a pro-bending competition.

How could anyone not look up to that? There is also a pretty cheesy love triangle, but it only serves to balance out the much darker aspects of the show: the big bad looking to rid the world of all benders. I’d go into more detail, but I’d rather you watch the show yourself. Catch it on Saturdays! Do it for Korra.

The thing I loved about Avatar: The Last Airbender (and so far, Korra) is that the main female characters are unapologetically tough and talented. Katara and Toph were strong and talented and would take no discrimination (for example, there was the one time when Master Paku would not teach Katara because she was a girl, and she challenged him to a fight) They don’t need to get softened by the love of a man who uncovers their inner vulnerability (*barf*), they don’t need to have unrelated weaknesses to make them seem more human (like, so many characters who are talented and great but hey! they are unintentionally hilarious or accident-prone or something), they are just hella skilled and gifted and in the words of korra, one just has to “deal with it”

Ha, can you say I like these shows?

I was wondering if I should put this show in my weekly anime review or not. I kind of got annoyed up by how long it took them to finish The Last Airbender. So I decided to wait for when they were “done” with Korra before watching it.

    And she is awesome. ;)

I tape this on my DVR as it airs while I am teaching. I love this show. I love this show lots.

I do adore me my Korra and A:TLA, though I was disappointed by last week’s episode. It had a couple interesting homages to the last series, but it seemed like a stiff, forced, rushed episode, which I guess I can forgive considering Korra’s only slated to run 26 of them.

Am I the only one who suspected that the woman Pema was being so ambiguous about was Lin?

    WATCH IT.

It is a great show based off a great series! The writers do a fabulous job of blending cultures, showing all types of people, and writing about real emotions that aren’t always “good.” Just, you’ll understand. Go watch and see.

I can’t pick up their names very quickly – it happens in all TV shows for me. :( Are you talking about Scarf Boy or Scarf Boy’s Brother?

…cause I still miss Zuko… (yes, he grew on me)
