Rum Diary: A Flight of Daiquiris

For many people, July means fireworks, festivals and farmers’ markets.  For my friend B and I, it means Daiquiri Day.  National Daiquiri Day (it’s real) is July 19, and to help the daiquiri throw off its kitchy, tiki-bar associations, we concocted a trio of fantastic new flavors that harmonize like the Dixie Chicks at a rum-soaked county fair:  Strawberry Basil Balsamic, Watermelon Mint, and Grapefruit.

A flight of daiquiris: grapefruit, watermelon mint and strawberry basil balsamic.

Strawberry Basil Balsamic Daiquiri

You’ll Need:

1/2 C. fresh strawberries

1/4 C. light rum

1/2 C. ice cubes

1/2 t. balsamic vinegar

1/2 t. simple syrup or agave nectar

2 large basil leaves, plus one for garnish

Put everything except the basil garnish into a blender and blend.  Garnish with a sprig of basil.  Makes one drink.
