Lunchtime Poll 11/16: First Concert

OK, Persephoneers, it’s Friday, and this has been my first week back to the grindstone since Hurricane Sandy and a nor’easter knocked out the power at my school, keeping it closed for two weeks. I’ve still got a lot of catching up to do, so I’m asking one simple question this week.

What was your first concert?

My parents took me to see The Who perform Quadrophenia in 1996, when I was 13. The arena in Buffalo was brand new, and there was a seating mix-up, so we got to move down to the floor. I was brought up to be a Who fan (actually, Tommy was my first Broadway show), so this was pretty exciting. Billy Idol made an appearance, which is supremely awesome. Oh, and my dad explained what that smokey smell was that wasn’t quite like cigarettes.

It was rad.

I think I’ve already talked about this here, but my first show came rather late – Andrew Bird in a tiny Italian restaurant in Hong Kong, January 2010. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bF-qloNNE9Q

It was one hell of an introduction to concerts, and now I live and breathe them.

Mine was Raffie when I was super little. When I was old enough to remember and choose, it was Garth Brookes. Yup. I’ll admit it.

Taylor Dayne with my mom circa 1987. My mom worked for the concert promoter so we had kick-ass seats.

Anastasia, with my parents and brother. The sound work was awful and our seats were up so high I was afraid to stand up. Not my best first experience.

My first was seeing the Pretenders at the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach, SC. I was 16 and my brother was 13, and we ran down front while my parents sat in the balcony. We were in a sea of bikers who were practically in tears, they loved Chrissie Hynde so much. It was fantastic.

My one and only was Green Day in Glasgow in 2009. Awesome, awesome experience.

I went to a lot of kid concerts with my mom as a small child (Fred Penner and such). When I was 13 or so I saw Sixpence None the Richer and Better than Ezra in concert at some hall in Ann Arbor and that was the first sort of rock concert I had ever been too. I still have a shirt.

My first concert was Aerosmith with Monster Magnet opening at an outdoor venue. It was pretty awful. Monster Magnet was horrible (and I like hard rock), it rained which cut Aerosmith’s set 45 minutes short, someone set our picinic blanket on fire, and a pair of good ol’ boys behind us reported my friend to security for having pot. He did not have pot. He was smoking a pipe (like old school, tobacco type pipe) and these 2 douches were convinced it was pot and he just wouldn’t share it with them. Then we almost died in a car wreck on the way home after we were already lost. It’s amazing I ever went to another concert again.

My first concert was The Outfield in college. They played at this tiny kicker bar in Waco and the only song anyone knew was “I Don’t Want to Lose Your Love.” At least they had a really cute roadie.

First real concert was AC/DC at Madison Square Garden. MUCH better show!
