I would set up a fund for people who have full-time jobs and not a lot of money to get funds for international travel. The requirements would be that you haven’t been in school for at least 10 years and you work at least 40 hours a week.
I got the idea because once you are out of school, the opportunity to get support for adventure diminishes. Suddenly you have to pay off loans and get money for rent, and no one wants to give you money to do anything fun. I’ve met so many people in their late twenties and early thirties who have never traveled abroad and don’t see it happening because they don’t make enough money. So if I had a million dollars, I’d help those people see the world.

I think I would set up something to help middle class families struggling to keep their homes. SO many find their wages cut or their hours cut or businesses folding that they don’t know what to do. They still make “too much” for any assistance from agencies that help. They have no one to turn to.
That is a GREAT idea. I think there is a lot of space to help people who are somewhere between destitute and comfortable. Just getting by people need help, too!
I have this half-formed idea for mobile produce trucks for areas that don’t have the same access to fresh fruits and vegetables that the ‘burbs do. Have them out at times when people are likely to be able to shop, and make frequent enough stops that people don’t have to haul a ton of groceries around.
Someone in Detroit actually did this! It wasn’t successful mainly because it didn’t have good advertising. Also, there were issues with how people actually use and purchase fruits and veggies.
Hmm. I’d need more market research then.
I’d build accessible playgrounds all over the place.
Playgrounds for everyone! You get a playground and you get a playground!
Libraries. I would donate to public library systems and literacy/learning programs. That would be like 70% of it. Then 15% to science and arts ed programs (either non-profit places or afterschool programs). And the last 15% to land/wildlife/waterway conservation and restoration.
All good things to support!
I would purchase a bigger house/apartment complex for people to escape domestic violence for the non-profit I volunteer with. There is such a huge need and it is so hard to have to turn people to other options because we are at capacity. Ugh. So frustrating!!
Yes! I wonder what could get done if we gave everyone with the urge to help a million dollars?
I would want to do a couple of things with that. One idea would be to set up a foundation for scholarships for urban youth in my city so they could further their educations. The other idea would be to invest in micro loans for women who want to start small businesses.
I’m working on it; hopefully only a few more weeks! (Chances are slim that it’ll happen before the end of the year but, with any luck, not too much longer than that…)
It’s hard to think of what to do with the money, because I know that I want to help out my kids without stripping them of their desire to have goals and such. I want to invest in people as much as I can, but it’s tricky. I think I’ll do a few small-scale anonymous string-free gifts to some who’ll use it to good effect, but other than that, I’m just not sure. I know it’ll change the dynamic of several friendships and will mean a lot more diligence on my part to avoid people who think that I owe them something merely because I have money…
I hope you get to help a lot of people!
