The slow drip of the HBO PR machine has begun”¦
And in two looonng months, Game of Thrones Season Three will be on our screens. (I’m not saying I don’t love the PR: I love it. Season Two hasn’t come out on DVD yet and I need my GoT fix.)
Mance Rayder, the Night’s Watchman turned King Beyond the Wall – plus bonus video of Ciarán Hinds showing us that he knows his audience: “People who love fantasy and drama… and a bit of butchery on the way.” I have to say I love Ciarán Hinds as an actor but I wasn’t sold on him for Mance Rayder, physically; I always imagined Mance as a smaller, wiry, sly kind of guy. That said, I’m definitely willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for a few episodes. Plus, he’s Ciarán Hinds.
Olenna Tyrell (Diana Rigg), stirring shit while dressed like a particularly stylish nun.
Jojen and Meera Reed – As predicted, they look pretty much perfect. Sigh.
Beric Dondarrion and Thoros of Myr (though no Anguy or Qyburn yet)
Brynden “the Blackfish” Tully, looking badass with a bow and arrow (no prizes to book readers for guessing the context of that shot).
We’ve also gotten to see returning characters Jon Snow and Ygritte; Catelyn Stark; Bran, Arya, and Sansa; Robb and Talisa; Joffrey and Margaery; Shae; Tyrion (with fetching new scar); Cersei and Tywin Lannister; Brienne and Jaime; Stannis and Melisandre; and of course Dany (standing in front of an army – hmm”¦). There is a well-dressed mysterious character in the on-set videos who I think may be Prendahl na Ghezn. One actor who sadly won’t be returning is Wilko Johnson who played the tongueless headsman Ser Ilyn Payne, as he has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Who we haven’t seen in character yet:
Catelyn’s little brother Edmure Tully (though quick-eyed fans will have spotted him very briefly in HBO’s “invitation to the set” video); Stannis’s wife and daughter, Selyse and Shireen Baratheon; Missandei; Tormund Giantsbane (though similarly to Edmure there is like a millisecond of his red-bearded self in that video); “Boy” (likely to be Ramsay Bolton); and Orell.
Another set of faces I would like to see is Mance Rayder’s court: certain members of Mance’s entourage are pretty important to later events so would need to show up fairly early in Season Three, I would guess.
They have also (sneakily and without any fanfare that I saw) cast Ed Skrein as Daario Noharis (according to IMDB, you’ll see him and his cheekbones in the very first episode):
So, who and what are you dying to see in action? Who is intriguing you most? Who is missing from the line-up?
Spoiler warning: Book readers, if you want to mention future book events in your comments, please use the spoiler tags i.e.: [*spoiler*] So RW stands for”¦ [/*spoiler*], without the *s. Seasons 1 and 2 of Game of Thrones and how they relate to the first two ASoIaF books are fair game, though.
