How to Plant: Onions

Hardy from zones 3-9 onions, onions are a cold season crop. The easiest way to plant onions is from sets, and they can be planted outdoors a few weeks before the last frost (as long as it’s not below 20 degrees). You can see a full planting guide at The Old Farmer’s Almanac.

As far as planting goes, I’ve found a very short and helpful video of square foot planting onion sets to make the most of a raised bed:

And there you have it! Easy peasy.

Ha, I expected this huge story/tutorial and you went with “By the power of YT”. Which is sometimes just the best way.

Honestly, this weekend I worked like a dog and came home and was like…onions….YOUTUBE. Some days you just gotta realize that a two minute video is more helpful than 18 paragraphs lol.

I want to garden so badly! I just don’t have the space or the sun. My apartment is just located terribly for anything that needs sun. I tried growing herbs last summer and couldn’t find a spot that got enough consistent sun. Got any tips for shade-friendly crops?

I did a post a few weeks ago about gardening in soil bags for apartments and how they’re perfect for greens (greens thrive in shade!)
