Today I am pleased to introduce you to a Kickstarter project that I think was made for Persephone enthusiasts.
What was your inspiration for this project?
Well, in short, we feel like there isn’t enough positive content available for women in the media right now and we want to be a part of that shift that is hopefully happening. Also, we as Heartfelt Productions (which is made up of me and my business partner and dear friend Dana Cook) have made two short documentaries about building self-esteem in young women, and we want to move on to inspiring women to go after their career ambitions so there can be more women at the top of their fields. So the idea for “The Empowerment Project” is to travel across the US to interview ten inspirational, career-minded women at the top of their fields and get to know them in a different way so women everywhere can get a peek into their lives and bring that influence into their own goals. And we are going to do the whole thing with an all female crew which is our favorite part of the project! We have worked on a few projects where the crew has been all women and it has been one of the most enriching, meaningful experiences we have had professionally. We believe having an all female crew truly makes this project unique as well as especially meaningful for those involved and those who watch it. This project is a dream coming true for us!
Can you tell us three things you’ve learned along the way so far?
In terms of what we have learned from Kickstarter, let’s see:
1. When someone donates to your project, no matter how much money, it feels incredible. It’s like someone saying, “I believe in your dream, here’s $20, go do it!” It’s definitely a feeling we’ve never had before!
2. Your family and friends can only take you so far in terms of donations. You really have to access the second and third tiers of people to really get your goal achieved, especially if it is a bigger goal, like ours at $25K. That’s what we’re trying to do now, and being featured in this magazine is a step in that direction :)
3. Apparently no more than 35% of people will watch your Kickstarter video! Of the people that have played our Kickstarter video, which by now is a couple hundred, only 35% of those people actually watch the whole thing and ours is less than four minutes long. So the best part of the message should be at the top of the video!
How will your project make the world a better place?
Great question! Well, overall we want to inspire women. We want to ask our subjects questions like: How did you get to your position in your career? How does it feel to be a woman in an industry where women are underrepresented? How do you balance personal life and work life? What advice would you share with other women that want to be in a similar place as you? We hope that by these women answering these types of questions that people watching the series can gain some valuable career advice and inspiration and therefore go after their own career ambitions and feel like they aren’t alone in their struggle. There simply needs to be more projects out there that inspire women to be all they can be because there are far too many products, shows, and movies that do the opposite. We want to add to the female empowerment conversation that has been recently sparked up and bring more positivity and more role models to look to. We hope that “The Empowerment Project” accomplishes all of these goals for the people that watch it.
