News Appetizers: A Day in the Life

Once upon a time there was a week. A week like any other. People woke up before they were ready, they drank way more coffee than they should, and went on with their lives. Bosses were annoying, classes required too much homework, and the fridge held only moldy cheese.

But as with all weeks, bigger things happened in the world. In Syria, Russian missile shipments arrived, putting any possibility of peace in jeopardy. New York Times

Some important people made attempts at making a type of peace. For example, President Obama decided to appoint a Republican to head the FBI. NPR

Life in other parts of the world was stranger than fiction. A woman gave birth on a toilet and her newborn became trapped in the pipes. The baby is okay. Turns out she was so embarrassed about being pregnant and unwed, that she really didn’t want anyone to know what was going on with her. This story, while strange, may reinforce your belief in humanity because the police believe her and everyone seems to be helping her build a support structure. CNN

Of course, not all mothers in crisis were treated well. In El Salvador, a seriously ill woman was denied an abortion. Her pregnancy will likely kill her. BBC

This story doesn’t end poorly or well because it doesn’t end at all. We just keep swimming and wait for more bad news and good news.
