This Week in Misogyny is The Tits

If there was ever a week to remember not to read the comments, it was this week. So much concern for Angelina Jolie’s boobs! And did you know feminism is to blame for gonorrhea and cheating husbands, while also being over? Neither did I! (Trigger warnings for the usual suspects apply.)

The Internet pretty much lost its collective shit over Angelina Jolie’s announcement that she’d gotten a preemptive mastectomy to reduce her risk of getting breast cancer. Many commenters lamented that she would do such a thing to the boobs they so love to ogle, while others made silly boob jokes while getting angry that she had the resources to take a step that many others can’t afford (instead of being angry that so many don’t have the resources!). At least we can all laugh at Rosalarian’s cartoon on tumblr that skewers the sexist reactions.

It’s Cervical Cancer Awareness Month in Singapore. Apparently they thought sexual innuendo was the best way to encourage women to get tested.

Ad showing three women in a Marilyn Monroe skirt-blowing-up pose, captioned "Lift Your Skirt. Save Your Life."

Citizens of Ireland overwhelmingly favor new legislation that would allow abortions in limited circumstances, but politicians in the country may see themselves as “philosopher kings” who are smarter and more moral, so it’s far from certain that it will pass.

An El Salvador woman known only as Beatriz had to go to the country’s Supreme Court on Wednesday to beg permission to get a potentially life-saving abortion. She suffers from lupus and other health complications that make pregnancy extremely risky, and her fetus is anencephalic, meaning it has no brain and cannot possibly survive outside the womb. No decision has been made at press time.

In the wake of a massive increase in rape reports so far this year, a Hong Kong official said that “young ladies should not drink too much.”

Last week’s military sexual assault story came to us courtesy of the Air Force; now an Army sergeant first class who was in charge of sexual assault cases at Fort Hood is being investigated for sex abuse and possible forced prostitution. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel is understandably pissed that this keeps happening.

The mayor of Osaka defended the use of “comfort women” who were forced to have sex with Japanese soldiers during World War II. Elyse at Skepchick talks about how we draw the line about what’s acceptable during wartime.

Don’t want your husband to cheat on you, ladies? Pat Robertson has the answer! You just have to “make a home so wonderful that he doesn’t want to wander” and if he does anyway (because men are just like that!), well, get over it so long as he still buys you stuff.

Or! You could look to the example of Tony Morgan, who says the secret to a happy marriage is to dictate each other’s haircuts and never ever be anywhere alone with anyone of the opposite sex (because the best husbands are the ones who are so in love with you that they’ll totally jump another woman if they have to ride in a car alone with her for some reason).

“Skinny Mini Speed Dating” is apparently a thing. No ladies above a size 8 are allowed, and you have to put your size on your name tag. The men who attend are, predictably, awful.

Unhappy about your body? Don’t talk about it, because nobody likes a “fat talker.”

The CDC is concerned about a new drug-resistant strain of gonorrhea. Blame the liberals! Or maybe God sent it to punish slutty slutty feminists!

Phyllis Schlafly thinks “Feminism is at war with Mother Nature” and that women should ignore Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In movement.

No wait, James Dobson just found out that some women do want to have children instead of careers. Feminism is over, yay!

Where my ladies at?

  • Not on US cable news! “Expert” guests on CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News are overwhelmingly white men.
  • Not on British news either! Women over 50 make up only 5% of the total on-air personalities. The male/female divide is fairly even below 50, but then the women disappear – only 18% of older presenters are female (compared to 53% of the population).
  • Not on the cover of Sports Illustrated! Of the 716 issues published between 2000 and 2011 (not counting the Swimsuit Issues), female athletes only appeared on 35 covers.
  • Not in the movies! In 2012′s 100 top grossing films, only 28.4% of speaking roles went to women.

It’s probably not much of a surprise that Reddit has a misogyny problem, but it’s still disheartening to see it laid out like this.

I’m not thrilled at her assertion that women who like bad boys don’t love themselves, but otherwise this is a pretty good takedown of the “Women don’t like nice guys” trope.

The CEO of Eden Foods (the maker of EdenSoy and other organic foods) is suing to get out of the ACA requirement that the company has to provide contraceptive coverage for its employees. The customers are not happy.

Finally, a some good news. A female video game developer was sick of the sexist images in her office, so she commissioned a parody to highlight their absurdity. And bless her boss; he actually understood and apologized for being an ass.

The Angelina Jolie story pisses me off. She had a potentially life-saving surgery, motivated by the knowledge that her mother died from breast cancer, and she didn’t want her children to endure a very sick or dying parent. But because that surgery involved removing her sexy, sexy breasts, she’s “an idiot” and “selfish” and “obviously wasn’t getting enough attention”.

Where the fuck is my patriarchy-smashing hammer.

uughh… I always read these posts, and enjoy them (*ish?*), but so much misogyny on a Friday afternoon… I should really learn to stop clicking ALL the links. At least not all on the same day.

They have certainly been busy now, haven’t they? Gosh. This: “No decision has been made at press time.” Um. I mean. Because that’s definitely a hard decision to make right there. And then Barber…comprehensive sex education is apparently a bad word, who knew? GOSH.

Reddit is one of my biggest issues. I didn’t know Reddit existed until I started dating this one guy…and his friends also had Reddits…and I saw Reddit…and I just. It’s like this culture dish that is determined to help spawn the sickest, most misogynistic twerps alive. It’s appalling! I cannot stand Reddit. End rant.

I cringe whenever I see a news story about Pat Robertson. His statements are generally dismissed by the younger generation of the church, but this line of thinking still persists and it sucks. What’s heartening is that there are those on the more liberal and progressive side has begun shouting down this line of thinking over the last few years.
