Pop Culture Brunch: Saturday FanFic

Readers, I had a root canal this week, so my Saturday plans are to sit on the couch, under a quilt, reading fanfic between Netflix binges.

I need recommendations. What are some of the best fanfics you’ve read?

  1. Ok, I realize I’m really late to the party, but I’ve got a whole list of fanfics right here and they won’t leave me alone.

    I’ll categorize this by length:

    One-shots:

The Man Who Freed Me, by Cantare, in the Aladdin fandom. It basically tells the whole story from the Genie’s perspective, with a lot of insight into his character/character development.

If you offer salvation, I will run (into your arms), by mornmeril, in the Les Miserables fandom. It’s a modern AU Enjolras/Grantaire fic, but with the ages switched around (i.e. Grantaire is younger). Basically, Enjolras takes him in after he’s beat up by his dad, and things go from there.

Learning to Hope, by Ralkana, in the Pride and Prejudice fandom. Here, we get to see inside Darcy’s head when his aunt comes to visit him after Elizabeth tells her off.

And sometimes you hear the silence speak, by twoskeletons, in the Narnia Fandom. It’s a Golden Age era fic, with Susan and Edmund going to Calormen to learn magic, and all the weird shit that goes down.

    Multi-chaptered/ongoing fics:

The Learning Curve, by bubblegirljulz, in the Pride and Prejudice/The Lizzie Bennet Diaries fandom. Basically a series of lemons featuring Will Darcy and Lizzie Bennet, but it’s so much more than that, because it charts their burgeoning relationship.

Dichotomy, by snitchnipped, in the Narnia fandom. Basically explores the brotherly relationship between Edmund and Peter, and how they help and advise each other, both in Narnia and England.

A Marital Education, by Yahtzee, in the Pride and Prejudice fandom. Darcy has performance anxiety (don’t ask) and Elizabeth has to figure out how to work around it.

Some Friendlier Sky, by A Marguerite, in the Les Miserables fandom. “Synopsis: Courfeyrac falls through the roof of no. 7 Rue de l’Homme Armé, taking down not only the ceiling, but the carefully built walls Valjean has constructed around himself and Cosette. Wacky hijinks ensue.”

The Stone Gryphon, by rthstewart, in the Narnia fandom. It’s more of a series, really, but basically it’s a fresh look at the Pevensies life in our world, post-Narnia.

  2. Sorry about your root canal! Hope you feel better soon!

In Supernatural fandom I have a bunch, so I’m gonna condense it a bit. My favorite fics are:

Dream As If You’ll Live Forever – A three part convict!AU, where Cas doesn’t speak. Trigger warnings for child abuse and non-con. Dean/Castiel, Sam/Jessica, Bobby/Ellen.

Kiss You When It’s Dangerous – A 57k AU where Cas is an FBI agent drawn into the world of hunters after Dean and Sam rescue him from an attempted human sacrifice. Castiel/Dean.

(Fear) The Reaper – A Psych/Supernatural crossover. A Halloween fic about zombies, psychic detectives, and hunters.

In The Eagle fandom I ship Marcus Aquila/Esca MacCunoval, my favorite fics are:

Until All The Songs Are Sung – A canon-era fanfic, where they go to see Esca’s kin in Hibernia. Romance, wars, and fish-out-of-water moments ensue.

Fighter – A 65k AU where Marcus is an undercover cop, and Esca is a slave who is sold as a cage fighter in underground Death Matches. So many Trigger Warnings I’m just gonna copy and paste from the fic: this story contains graphic descriptions of violence, references to non-con, minor character death of a child, forced drug use and attempted suicide, as well as kidnapping and emotional abuse.

Time yet for a hundred indecisions (aka the CEO AU) – A 22k AU where Marcus becomes the CEO of a company that Esca works for, which they only realize AFTER a one-night stand. Anger, work politics, and awkwardness ensure.

In Harry Potter fandom, my favorite fic is Secrets. It’s an epic-length (over 411k) alternate seventh year story, with different trials and a different death of Voldie. I like it so much that I prefer it to Deathly Hallows.

Care to share with us what you read? I’m always looking for something interesting. :)
