Looking back over the past 12 months, I think many of us can agree that 2014 was a pretty decent year for movies. But what does 2015 have in store for us? Lots of sequels, family flicks, and movies based on comic books and fairy tales. Here are several 2015 movies to look forward to, beginning with sequels.
Mockingjay: Part 2
Mockingjay: Part 1 was just released at the end of November and Part 2 will be hitting theaters in 2015 — November 20th to be precise. Those of you who read the books (everybody, right?) know what we’re in for but knowing it and seeing it are completely different.
The second installment of the Divergent trilogy will be released on March 20th, 2015. While Divergent stayed true to the book, there’s a mysterious box featured in the trailer for the second film that wasn’t in the book. Interesting…
Pitch Perfect 2
Yes, it has arrived…or it will be arriving soon. A sequel to the aca-mazing Pitch Perfect hits theaters on May 15th. Elizabeth Banks returns not only as a cast member but as the director. Rebel Wilson is back and so are Anna Kendrick and Brittany Snow. Here’s the trailer, in case you missed it.
Magic Mike XXL
While I’m disappointed that my boyfriend Matthew McConaughey won’t be appearing in the sequel to 2012’s Magic Mike, I am glad to see that Joe Manganiello will be back as “Big Dick Richie.” Channing Tatum is back, too, and he brought Donald Glover and Michael Strahan with him. There will be more ladies this time also. Elizabeth Banks, Amber Heard, and Jada Pinkett Smith are all co-starring.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
It’s about time! Episode VII of the saga is coming in 2015. Unfortunately, you’re going to have to wait a whole year for it. It’s not scheduled to be released until December 18th, 2015. So you’ll have to settle for this trailer for now.
Speaking of taking its sweet time to return, Jurassic World is finally going to show up next year with a release date of June 12th, 2015. Hey, it’s only been 10 years since it was supposed to be released. This one involves a genetically-modified hybrid dinosaur and a theme park.
Avengers: Age of Ultron
This is the one I’ve really been waiting for! Have you seen the trailer? AMAZING! I just…I don’t even know. It’s so much darker (which I like in comic book movies) and Ultron is just such a badass villain. This is going to be SO good. I just wish DC would take notes and maybe not screw up the Justice League movie.
Ok, that’s enough sequels for now. How about a few family flicks?
Yes, Charlie Brown and his beloved beagle, Snoopy, are getting their own movie. This one is going to be adorable and I love it when a new generation of little ones get to enjoy something that their parents grew up with. Definitely check out the official website and download posters and wallpaper while you’re there.
Fairy tale movies, the non-animated kind, seem to be doing well. With Into the Woods being released this month, I couldn’t include it in a list of 2015 movies, but Cinderella qualifies thanks to a March 13th release date. Lily James has the title role and Helena Bonham Carter plays her fairy godmother while Cate Blanchett plays the wicked stepmother. It’s so pretty!
Those adorable little yellow creatures from Despicable Me are getting their own movie. Minions gives us the backstory behind Gru’s crew, following them on their journey to find a master worth serving.
Pixar always seem to hit a home run and, judging by the trailer, it doesn’t look like they’ll be breaking that streak with Inside Out, which will take us inside the minds of an 11-year-old girl and her family. Parents are going to love this one as much as kids do. Check out the trailer.
Now let’s jump right into the adult movies. No, not that kind of “adult” movie although this first one does sort of toe the line.
Fifty Shades of Grey
‘Fess up, how many of you plan on hate-watching this one? Or how many of you are willing to admit that the books have been a guilty pleasure and you’re excited to see the movie? It’s okay, we won’t tell. Regardless of your motives for wanting to see it, the wait is over. It’s scheduled for release on February 13th, just in time for Valentine’s Day.
Far from the Madding Crowd
If you’re a fan of Victorian romances, you might want to make plans to go see this one, based on an 1874 novel about a young woman, Bathsheba, and her relationships with three men. No red rooms and handcuffs and psychological abuse disguised as BDSM in this one! It’s pure Jane-Austen-ish romance.
Mila Kunis stars as Jupiter Jones in this sci-fi flick directed by The Wachowskis (Lana and Andy), who also brought us the Matrix franchise. Jupiter is a housekeeper who has no idea that other planets exist and that she happens to be a royal heir. Fortunately, Channing Tatum, as a genetic hybrid named Caine Wise, tracks her down to tell her.
That’s just the tip of the iceberg as far as 2015 movies go. There’s also Paul Rudd’s first superhero role in Marvel Universe’s Ant-Man. Thanks to the success of The Fault in Our Stars, we’re getting another movie based on a John Green novel with the release of Paper Towns. And if you can’t get enough of Thor, Chris Hemsworth is starring in Blackhat, a cybercrime thriller.
What are you going to be waiting in line for next year?
