Twelve Christmas Songs I Actually Like

‘Tis the time of year for Christmas songs, be they decent or obnoxious… and everyone has their own ideas of what constitutes good or bad Christmas songs. Here are ten of my favorite Christmas and winter songs. Hopefully you find something you like!

1. “Fairytale of New York” by The Pogues, featuring Kirsty McColl

This is one of my favorite Christmas songs. I first heard this a few years ago on Christmas FM, which broadcasts out of Ireland, and have loved it since.

2. “Winter Fields” by Bat for Lashes

This is such a pretty song. Natasha Khan has a beautiful voice, and the song brings to mind moonlit hills covered with newly fallen snow.

3. “All I Want for Christmas Is You” by Against the Current

I love this cover of Mariah Carey’s song. Yes, we all know the song, but I love the edgy sound of this cover.

4. “Until the Morning Comes” by Glass Pear and Jem

Glass Pear and Jem, who happen to be brother and sister, are both musicians in the UK. Both of them have songs that have provided background music to many American television shows, including Vampire Diaries and Grey’s Anatomy.

5. “Yule Shoot Your Eye Out” by Fall Out Boy

The song you would sing to your ex the first Christmas after a really nasty breakup.

6. “What’s This?” by Danny Elfman, from The Nightmare Before Christmas

Because it’s such a good song.

7. “Twelve Days of Christmas” by Straight No Chaser

Hilarious and amazing!

8. “Ding Dong Merrily on High” by Celtic Woman

It’s more traditional, and not one you hear a lot, and this version of it is so pretty!

9. “Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth” by Bing Crosby and David Bowie

I still think this is an amazing duet. Bonus: pre-Jareth David Bowie.

10. “Text Me Merry Christmas” by Straight No Chaser featuring Kristen Bell

Love this!

11. “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” by Judy Garland, from Meet Me in St. Louis

This is my favorite version of the song. A family of snowpeople gave their lives for this song.

12. “Christmas Countdown” by Frank Kelly

Trust me. It’s hilarious.
