10 Reasons Brooklyn Nine-Nine is the Best Show on Network TV

If you aren’t watching Brooklyn Nine-Nine, let me convince you why you should be.

  1. An actual diverse ensemble cast, and no one is written as a token anything.Publicity still of the cast of Brooklyn Nine-Nine
  2. Each of the female characters has a distinct personality, with her own quirks, flaws, and defining characteristics, not all of which are positive or flattering. In other words, the women are people.gif of actress Stephanie Beatriz in a scene from Brooklyn Nine-Nine gif of actress Chelsea Peretti in a scene from Brooklyn Nine-Nine gif of actress Melissa Fumero in a scene from Brooklyn Nine-Nine
  3. If your dislike of Andy Samberg is what’s holding you back, the strength of the rest of the cast actually makes him totally bearable and even funny. gif of scene from Brooklyn Nine-Nine
  4. It’s hilarious.gif of scene from Brooklyn Nine-Nine
  5. Women police detectives wearing realistic outfits and sensible shoes!gif of scene from Brooklyn Nine-Nine
  6. Terry Crews.gif of actor Terry Crews in Brooklyn Nine-Nine

  8. Andre Braugher plays a black, gay police captain, and while the show doesn’t make those his only defining characteristics, it’s super realistic about how that would look in real life. gif of actor Andrea Braugher in a scene from Brooklyn Nine-Nine
  9. Passes the Bechdel test (two named women talking to each other about something other than men), the Vita Russo test (an LGBT character who is essential to the plot who is not solely defined by being LGBT), the Stacker Pentecost test (a POC in a position of authority tells a white dude to step off and is justified in doing so), and pretty much any other media representation test you can come up with.gif of a scene from Brooklyn Nine-Nine gif of actor Andre Braugher in a scene from Brooklyn Nine-Nine

  1. I’m trying, I really am, but sometimes I still feel a little bit too much like it yells HERE COMES A FUNNY MOMENT to me. Maybe it gets better in later episodes, I think I only watched the first ..four?

I want to like it, for the police captain alone. For starters.
