The summer season has started. I singled out a few shows, but so far only one was really gripping on the first episode: Rokka no Yuusha. Chaos Dragon and Overlord were quite generic, but that might change. There is also another show I wanted to watch, but the episode was delayed because of production trouble caused by a spring show.
Rokka no Yuusha ep 01
Rokka No Yuusha translates to “The Braves of the Six Flowers.” I kinda like the title.
This is rather classical in term of plot, though: big bad evil awakens every [X] years and some people are chosen to defeat it. This time our main characters are a vagabond trickster that calls himself the Strongest Man in the World and the current Saint of Blade: the princess with a name too long for me to remember. It is Nashetania Loei Piena Augustra, so she’s going to be dubbed Nasha from now on.
Now this is where the classical disappears. The setting is basically magical Aztec; it’s apparently different from the source material, but I personally don’t mind it. It’s different, in a good way. I also like Alder Mayer, I like trickster protagonists, not sure why they always need to be red-heads though. I’m reserving judgment on the princess, but so far she’s not a bimbo… which is a plus. I’m sure one of the six Braves will be a bimbo though.
This episode was mostly exposition: How the Braves are selected and the kick-off of the bad guy revival.
My only complains: bunny ears, why Nasha, why?
Chaos Dragon ep 01
This thing is so predictable so far. Considering it is based on some pen & paper sessions from some of the most well-known writers and directors in the Japanese anime industry you would have thought it wouldn’t be so generic.
I’m going to give it a few more episodes. The first one was exposition galore plus main character background, along with way too many characters. The only ones I remember are Ibuki, Kai and Mashiro and one of them is already no more. the villains were also super generic… and I’m still wondering what kind of armor the purple lady is actually wearing.
Overlord ep 01
This was kinda boring. We are in the last days of the most popular DMMO-RPG (Dive Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) in 2126 and a lonely guildmaster is waiting in his guildhalls for the game to be shutdown at midnight.
At 00:00:01, he wakes up in the same world without a console or UI and with the NPCs acting like real people, having smells and responding to normal conversation instead of formal commands. I’m going to bet that he just fell asleep or something. Anyway, he is now the lord of a massive guildhall with lots and lots of NPCs at his command.
He is also not evil despite being a skeleton and all his servants being monsters, more or less. I’ll give it a few more episodes to see where it goes, but the first episode was a bit too heavy on talking without much substance.
Arslan Senki ep 13.5
Mid-season recap. I want more Arslan!
