Imaginary Conversations with Idiots: Live Music Edition

May 8, 2012 at 3:30 pm in Music

On Monday night, I went to a live gig. The support band was great — and the band I went to see was fantastic. But when I wasn’t singing along to the bangin’ tunes, this is what I really wanted to come out of my mouth…

Recap: The Vampire Diaries, Episode 3.20, “Do Not Go Gentle”

April 30, 2012 at 5:30 pm in New Show Recap

The literary among you will notice that this episode is named after a villanelle by Dylan Thomas: a poem which was written about his dying father, and ends thus:

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

THIS MAY BE A HINT.

Recap: The Vampire Diaries, Episode 3.19, “Heart of Darkness”

April 23, 2012 at 7:30 pm in New Show Recap

Welcome back to Mystic Falls after an annoyingly long hiatus, yet in their alternate universe full of ridiculously good-looking living and undead people, very little time has passed. And the stakes are high.

Recap: Game of Thrones, Episode 2.2, “The Night Lands”

April 11, 2012 at 4:00 pm in New Show Recap

I’m going to try something new and a little different this week: after all if you’re reading the recap I’m going to assume you’ve already seen the episode. So instead of summarising, let’s get speculating… (and fangirling). Read the rest of this entry →

Recap: The Vampiaries, Episode 3.17 “Break On Through”

March 26, 2012 at 1:00 pm in New Show Recap

We begin with Alaric lying in an MRI scanner — Dr. Fell wants to check that his recent murderous tendencies don’t have a natural cause, because as she says to Elena, “If it’s medical, I can treat it.” (A little optimistic there, dontcha think?) Alaric is still skeptical about her theory that he’s the killer and the Gilbert ring is responsible, but while he’s in the scanner the face in the mirror starts looking evil.

What I Watched Last Night: Embarrassing Bodies

March 20, 2012 at 6:30 pm in Pop Culture

Attack angry anuses! See the side-effects of too much sun, sea, and sex! Banish bashfulness in the name of good health!

All direct quotes from the UK show, Embarrassing Bodies. When a show is this fond of alliteration, you know it’s worth a watch.

Recap: The Vampiaries, Episode 3.14, “Dangerous Liaisons”

February 13, 2012 at 1:00 pm in New Show Recap

In this week’s episode, the “previously, on The Vampire Diaries” spiel was all about relationships—oh, and something about a ball? But before we get to the dresses and the dancing and the violence, ZOMG, we have to do a little plot exposition.

Recap: The Vampiaries, Episode 3.13, “Bringing Out the Dead”

February 6, 2012 at 1:00 pm in New Show Recap

There must be a serious letter-writing campaign going on, because this week we have shirtless Stefan. Shirtless, grumpy Stefan. Ahem. Alaric gets good use out of his magical ring; and as Caroline says goodbye to one parent, Bonnie attempts to bond with hers, and the Originals… Well, let’s see, shall we? Book Review: “Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal?”

January 25, 2012 at 1:00 pm in Books

I first heard the title of this book at a talk at a writer’s festival, before the book was written. Jeanette Winterson was — is — one of my favourite writers, and as a speaker she didn’t disappoint either. During the talk — which was articulate, engaging, lyrical, witty: a more down-to-earth form of her writing — Jeanette referred to her mother only as “Mrs Winterson,” telling us that the final thing she said to Jeanette, when she left home as a teenager, happily in love with another girl, was: “Why be happy when you could be normal?”

Recap: The Vampiaries, Episode 3.11, “Our Town”

January 16, 2012 at 1:00 pm in New Show Recap

This week’s episode starts off well, with Damon in the shower (they got my letters!) and Elena punching the crap out of, well, a punching bag. Kissing Damon and getting him to take away her brother(/cousin)’s free will isn’t sitting well with her, it seems… but that’s the least of her problems in this episode.

Winter Holidays: Iceland

December 29, 2011 at 4:00 pm in Travel

This December, I had a week’s holidays from work that I had to take before 2012, or they’d disappear into whatever ether bureaucratic allowances go. So off I flew to Iceland. In winter. Bear with me, it’s not as mad an idea as you might think…

Yes, Iceland in winter is, um, icy. And snowy—as the plane descended, I leaned out the window looking for my first sight of land, because I’m a kid like that, but it took me a few minutes to realise that I’d been staring at it for several minutes. I just hadn’t recognised it, because it was just all snow. And there is only about four hours of daylight. Read the rest of this entry →

Open Thread: Fantasy Festivals edition

November 25, 2011 at 6:00 pm in Open Thread

Yesterday the USA celebrated Thanksgiving – a national festival that was established relatively recently (1863 – though some USians don’t celebrate it at all, for various reasons) and involves certain foods and rituals – most prominently, the ritual of each participant giving thanks, out loud, before the big meal – or so the movies tell me.
