Eating Like a Goddess

Nearly every woman I know has a screwed up relationship with food. I think the way to heal this is not more of the same; it’s eating like a goddess.

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, I broke my wrist. For those of you who’ve had similar issues or other mobility or disability issues, you know how difficult it is to move about the world feeling impaired in some way (and I realize there are way worse things than a broken wrist). The thing I found is that pain and discomfort are far easier to deal with than the little things like brushing your teeth or putting on a bra. Read the rest of this entry →

I don’t really follow Lady Gaga, but one of my lovely readers sent me a link to one of her recent tweets, and it bummed me out. The tweet read:

This week’s post is a little short because I broke my darn wrist and the combo of typing with one hand and potentially nodding out from Percoset is making blog writing a highly undesirable activity.
But I just had to weigh in on the Samantha Brick story from a bit of a different perspective. Read the rest of this entry →

If there’s one meme that makes me particularly nuts about weight loss gurus, it’s this one:

For most of my childhood, my dad was an avid Aikidoist. I would sometimes go to the dojo with him, and watched as he and other grown ups would roll themselves into incredibly agile little balls and roll in a circle around the room as part of their warm up. It always looked fun to me, but when my parents tried to encourage me to take classes with the other kids, I balked.
Even at the tender age of 7, I was afraid of being bad at something. I had already figured out that I was “bad at gym class” and that I wasn’t good at tumbling, gymnastics, etc. Taking classes at the dojo felt like it was just going to be more of the same gym class stuff that I was already trying to avoid with timely visits to the nurse. Recently, I was working with a client who has had Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) for about 40 years. She’s seen specialists who have diagnosed it as IBS because no other physical problems are present. I asked her about all of the different remedies that she’s tried, and she’s pretty much tried everything — from acupuncture to chiropractic to various supplements to eliminating allergenic foods from her diet. Without fail, no matter what she does, her symptoms have come back. Read the rest of this entry →

Moving from a diet/weight loss mentality to a Health At Every Size® mentality can feel pretty daunting. It’s not necessarily easy to let go of typical beliefs around weight and health when everyone from your doctor to your mom to various media to your office mate are telling you about the wonders of the latest diet/celebrity weight loss/the dangers of fat, etc. Even if you’ve been reading about HAES® and understand why it makes sense, it can be hard when you actually try to apply it to your own life. Did the title of this post kind of piss you off? Good!
The idea that weight loss is a good idea and a worthy achievement is so ingrained in our society that most of us take it for granted. Of course, losing weight is an achievement, right? We heap praise on anyone who does it. We flagellate ourselves for not achieving it. Read the rest of this entry →

Unless you’ve been living under a lovely rock this week (and I would love to crawl under there with you), you’ve heard about the Congressional investigation into the Affordable Care Act’s birth control mandate spearheaded by Congressman Issa.

Last week, I had the honor of chatting about sex and dating with authors Hanne Blank and Virgie Tovar as part of the Body Love Revolutionaries Telesummit. They shared so much of their expertise on sex and dating*, that I just had to write about it this week.
I like to think of pleasure as a divine right bestowed upon all of us, and too often, we don’t prioritize it. We put all of our other responsibilities first, and forget that pleasure is our responsibility as well. Pleasure is what makes living actually enjoyable. Read the rest of this entry →
