Fringe 4.22, “Brave New World” (part 2 of 2)

May 14, 2012 at 4:00 pm in New Show Recap

We open on a prehistoric-looking landscape. Bell watches it with Walter, chattering away about this great new world he’s been creating. The image — a holograph —winks out, and we see they’re in Bell’s quarters on the freak freighter. Bell can’t wait for Walter to see the real thing. He says he couldn’t stop it now if he wanted to, and he certainly doesn’t want to. The man is downright giddy about the coming apocalypse. Read the rest of this entry →

Recap: Fringe 4.21, “Brave New World” (part 1 of 2)

May 7, 2012 at 4:00 pm in New Show Recap

In Boston, a man named Neil buys a café mocha inside the Clane Center before getting on the escalator and heading outside. He drops his drink, clutches his stomach and drops to his knees. A woman passing by asks if he’s okay. Probably not: smoke starts pouring off of him and coming from his mouth, which has turned black. The same thing happens to other people. One woman cautions another not to move, as that is what seems to be causing the deaths. Several other people stand frozen in place, afraid to move a muscle.

Fringe 4.20, “Worlds Apart”

April 30, 2012 at 4:00 pm in New Show Recap

The good news: Fringe has been renewed for one more season! I wish we’d gotten the full eight of the writers reportedly planned, but at least this way we’ll get things wrapped up for real. The bad news: this episode’s title, which is driving me mad. Is there supposed to be an apostrophe in “worlds”? Isn’t there? I’m assuming there isn’t, because it makes 80 times more sense that way.

Fringe 4.19, “Letters of Transit”

April 23, 2012 at 4:00 pm in New Show Recap

We’re jumping ahead to the year 2036 this week. But first, we get some back story, courtesy of scrolling text. In 2015, the Observers took over. The humans who survived were called Natives. Some Native factions became Loyalists and were marked by the Observers. Fringe was defeated, and a reduced force kept around to keep the Natives in line.

Fringe 4.18, “The Consultant”

April 16, 2012 at 4:00 pm in New Show Recap

We open on Otherlee’s funeral. It seems a bit disrespectful to call him Otherlee now, but what are you going to do? Lincoln and Altstrid sit in a car, watching the procession. Altstrid says she doesn’t like funerals. Otherlee’s parents, Col. Broyles, and Fauxlivia are standing under umbrellas in the rain. Fauxlivia promises to find the people responsible for Otherlee’s death. She hugs his mother.

Recap: Fringe, Episode 4.17, “Everything In Its Right Place”

April 12, 2012 at 1:00 pm in New Show Recap

This week’s episode is Lincoln-centric. I try to suppress a groan of boredom. Oh, but it’s mostly taking place in the other universe, so that might be okay. Anyway, Lincoln (the one from this universe) arrives at the Harvard lab ready to work, only to find everyone prepping Gene for “grazing day.” Poor girl’s suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder, on account of the fact that cows need sunshine and such. Recap: Fringe, Episode 4.16, “Nothing As It Seems”

April 4, 2012 at 5:30 pm in New Show Recap

This week, we open on a plane. Marshall Bowman — we’ve seen him before, way back in Season One — is writing something about technology being too good to be true. His nose starts bleeding, so he heads to the bathroom. He pulls out a little zippered kit, swabs his mouth, and swishes the swab around in some liquid. The liquid turns red. This Just In: Blackface Totally Okay Again

March 6, 2012 at 1:00 pm in Pop Culture

I must have missed the memo, but at some point blackface apparently became okay again. I thought we’d called a moratorium on it, but no, there’s Billy Crystal doing an impression of Sammy Davis, Jr. at the Academy Awards. Even more telling is a look at all the comments pouring in trying to excuse the bit. Whether you want to argue that Crystal was not actually wearing blackface because he was impersonating a real black person and not mocking an entire race of people, the fact remains that Crystal put makeup on his face to darken his skin to make him appear more like a black person. That’s pretty much the definition of blackface, folks. Read the rest of this entry →

Recap: Fringe, Episode 4.13, “A Better Human Being”

February 23, 2012 at 8:00 pm in New Show Recap

This episode picks up right where “Welcome to Westfield” left off. I heartily approve. This is how you handle a cliffhanger. Olivia tells Peter she kissed him because it “felt normal.” He’s worried about her health and wants Walter to check her out. She’s embarrassed and insists she just needs to rest, alone. Oh, and then she starts having flashes from the first timeline, specifically when she first realized Peter was from Over There. Again, I heartily approve. Read the rest of this entry →

Recap: Fringe, Episode 4.12, “Welcome to Westfield”

February 16, 2012 at 5:00 pm in New Show Recap

So. Um. Peter and Olivia are having sex. Right down to business, then. It’s unclear whether this is a memory or a dream. Olivia’s damn phone rings/buzzes just as they’re getting to the I-love-yous. It’s Peter. He and Walter have reached a breakthrough in their research, but they need Olivia’s help. Read the rest of this entry →

Fringe 4.11, “Making Angels”

February 7, 2012 at 1:00 pm in New Show Recap

We open this week on a man named Chet, sitting in his doctor’s office. He’s just learned he has malignant cancer. The doctor is very optimistic, telling Chet there is a 95% survival rate. After leaving the doctor, Chet sits down at a bus stop. A stranger sits down next to him and starts telling him the radiation therapy and chemotherapy won’t work. Rather than wondering how the hell this man knows his business, Chet tells the stranger that the doctor gave him a 95% chance of survival. The stranger says he’s the other 5%. A bus pulls up, blocking our view of the bench. When it pulls away, we see Chet is alone again. He’s lying down on the bench, dead, with blood streaming from his eyes. Read the rest of this entry →

Recap: Fringe, Episode 4.10, “Forced Perspective”

January 31, 2012 at 1:00 pm in New Show Recap

This week Olivia and Broyles are examining surveillance photos of the Observers. Broyles says they’ve been tracking the Observers for three years. Nice to know you’re on top of things, FBI. Olivia relays the Observer’s message about her inevitable death. She says Astrid’s blood test found no DNA match, but did find antibodies for the Spanish flu, the last outbreak of which was in 1919. Broyles wants Olivia to have a security detail, but she took the Observer’s message as a warning rather than a threat. Read the rest of this entry →

Recap: Fringe, Episode 4.09, “Enemy of My Enemy”

January 24, 2012 at 1:00 pm in New Show Recap

Fringe Division, New York. Col. Broyles views security cam footage of Fauxlivia and Otherlee sneaking Lincoln into the building. He figures out where they stashed him and fills a syringe with something yellow. Luckily for Lincoln, Walternate stops Col. Broyles (with Peter in tow) to tell Broyles about the infiltrating shape-shifters. Murphy — or the shape-shifter posing as him — is soon to be autopsied. Col. Broyles says Fauxlivia and Otherlee are at that moment tracing the call that was made to Murphy. Read the rest of this entry →
