Fun Time Open Thread: Finish the Lyric

May 15, 2012 at 10:00 pm in Tuesday Trivia

I am having a musical week and I thought I would share. My fellow editors introduced me to Songza, which is a magical wonderland of music, and MiniB has discovered The Cure. Between the two, I’ve been thinking about all the songs I know by heart.  Read the rest of this entry →

May 14, 2012 at 3:30 pm in Ladyguides

Say you have a sewing machine you have never learned how to use. Or perhaps you knew how to use it once, but it’s been so long that you are slightly afraid it will eat you if you break it out again. Well, never fear. I’m here to ease you into the wonderful world of machine sewing, one baby step at a time.  Read the rest of this entry →

What I Watched Last Night: The Moth

May 10, 2012 at 8:30 pm in Pop Culture

I spent last night playing around YouTube and listening to stories from The Moth. Have you ever heard of The Moth? You need to check it out. Seriously, right now. It is a not-for-profit organization in New York dedicated to storytelling. Read the rest of this entry →

DIY Resin 2: Pretty Pendants

May 9, 2012 at 7:30 pm in Ladyguides

Last time, I talked about casting resin with molds and dyes and whatnot. Today, we will be moving on to making jewelry using clear resin and bezels. These projects are both easier and more of a PITA than casting. The resin part is significantly easier, but the prep and design phase takes a lot more work.  Read the rest of this entry →

Fun Time Open Thread: Wherefore Art Thou Trivia?

May 8, 2012 at 10:00 pm in Tuesday Trivia

One of our regional theaters is gearing up for an outdoor production of The Tempest right now, and it’s got me in a Shakespearean frame of mind. After the cut, let’s see how much you know about the Bard of Avalon. Read the rest of this entry →

Consumer Goes Green: Flat Surface Cleaning

May 3, 2012 at 5:30 pm in Life

Last time we talked about hair, this week we’re attacking the flat surfaces in the house, floors and counters and whatnot. There’s a part of my brain that just wants to say “Go out and get a lot of vinegar,” because it rocks, but PoM and I have both already extolled the virtues of vinegar before so I will talk about other things instead. Fun Time Open Thread: What Kind of Cat Are You?

May 1, 2012 at 10:00 pm in Tuesday Trivia

I don’t know if you’ve ever heard this song, but MiniB and I have been listening to it a lot lately and I get tickled every time. It’s a campfire question and answer song, where the singer asks everyone about different words and phrases that contain “cat.”*  Read the rest of this entry →

Crockpot Pork Chops, Part 2: Faux Barbecue

May 1, 2012 at 7:00 pm in Food

Most people don’t know this, but I am originally from North Carolina. This means that when I think barbecue, I am hoping for lots of vinegar, a little brown sugar and absolutely NO barbecue sauce (unless it is made of more vinegar, brown sugar and some crushed red pepper flakes).  Read the rest of this entry →

LTP: 5/1/12

May 1, 2012 at 12:00 pm in Lunchtime Poll

My daughter got her first pair of glasses this weekend. She’s only seven, but everyone else in the family needs them so I wanted to be safe and get her checked. The official verdict is that she is slightly farsighted. She doesn’t need glasses, but they couldn’t hurt.  Read the rest of this entry →

What I Watched This Weekend: Learning “The Facts of Life”

April 30, 2012 at 9:00 pm in Just for Fun

Due to a confluence of events, I found myself with a powerful urge to watch The Facts of Life this weekend. Not just any episode, mind you; I wanted to watch the first season, otherwise known as “The Jo-less Year.”  Read the rest of this entry →

Crockpot Pork Chops

April 19, 2012 at 7:00 pm in Food

I enjoy a good pork chop, but I am not very good at making them. I am paranoid about raw pork, so I have a bad habit of overcooking it and leaving everything dry and tough. Now that I have gotten more comfortable with my crockpot, I thought I’d try pushing right through overcooked and into delicious slow-cooked territory. Read the rest of this entry →

Let’s Talk About Green-Streaming

April 19, 2012 at 5:30 pm in Life

I came across the term “green-streaming” while I was looking into the connection between Burt’s Bees and Clorox. It refers to the goal of making “green” mainstream.  Read the rest of this entry →
