I need to vent: someone just said the following to me on the internet and *I don’t think they were joking*.
“Homeopathy has not been proven to be useless. It works on the subtle, vibrational level and is, therefore not testable by known scientific methods. There is plenty of people-based (anecdotal) evidence. And if it didn’t work, do you…[Read more]

SERIOUSLY???!!!!!!
Vibrational level…..hmph. What will they think of next?
We need more science!! Explained to people!!
-
It’s actually a parody of itself. I don’t understand.

I love it. That ranks up there with the time someone told me that playing different music around water changed the molecular structure of the water. I told them that wasn’t true, and they replied – with a straight face – ”Yes it is! I have a video I can show you!”
A VIDEO! I just gave up at that.
-
/headdesk
Did you ask to see this video? I really want to know if it was one of those water on a speaker videos that makes it bounce and shake.
-
I never did see the video. I think it was just a case of an old person believing everything they see in print/on video. My dad is only slightly better than this. Only slightly.

Ohh, that’s that Emoto bullshit I bet. ~~~water senses your thoughts!!~~~~
-
Wow. Speaking of water changing shape though, if you search youtube for water bridge, there’s a cool video of water that has been magnetized or electrified or something and it forms a bridge between two cups of water. It’s been replicated, and the bridge only stretches to about 1 centimeter. Still, pretty cool.
And nothing to do with…[Read more]

Scicurious strikes again! Takedown of that headline-grabbing SNAKES! PMS! study http://scientopia.org/blogs/scicurious/2012/03/09/friday-weird-science/
-
Ok, I looked at the methods quickly, and the way they describe it, I think they randomized it. Which is good. I still agree with Scicurious though, the findings don’t seem to make sense. Why would we be more likely to spot snakes at one time of the month than others? Also, how did this tie in with PMS? Oh wait! Maybe we’re better at spotting…[Read more]

They also seem to conflate ”PMS” with ”premenstual phase of the menstrual cycle”, which is… not right. I don’t have access to the paper though.
-
I can send it to you if you want. Just let me know!

Hiya! I am not actually a scientist per se (but my fiance is a neuroscientist). I’m finishing my master’s in English and doing my field exam on literary responses to science in the 18th century (so, Hooke, Boyle, Newton, Lunar Society). Any chance there are historians of science hanging around these parts?

Long shot – would anyone be able to get this paper for me? http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1364661312000290
I don’t have login to use anymore. Only if it’s no cost to you, of course!

I’d actually like to see it continue in movie form for a little while before another series comes about. Star Trek really needed rejuvenation, cause it just wasn’t working with Enterprise.
I personally […]

I would like to see it back on TV regularly as well! I had such high hopes for Enterprise, but that just totally bombed. I have to say, though, that I really enjoyed the latest movie, and I’m really looking […]
