We’re five weeks away from the end of this fair column, and the Aughts’ closing year provides us with musical riches. My picks are rather indie-tastic this time around, punctuated by a couple of pop radio favorites. Join me:
After the smashing amount of great music to choose from in 1983, 1984 was a little easier for me to narrow down to ten picks. Yes, it’s the year that everyone made the same Orwellian joke, and the year that Van Halen made sure to release that so-titled album in January, but my most-loved songs from this time head in a different direction. Once again, I must point out that I am not trying to make a definitive list of the “Greatest” songs from each year, but rather curate an unnumbered collection of personal favorites, while still attempting to be concise.
Oh, friends, D has a surprising amount of great songs. I probably could have easily swapped in so many here, but sometimes my choices come down to two criteria: 1) Do I have a story behind loving this song? 2) Every time I hear this song, do I say/think, “This really is one of the best songs ever,” and feel compelled to sing along? These songs meet those criteria. I hope you like them, too.
