Ayuh Music: David Byrne and Brian Eno’s “My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts”

This is the second in a series of three columns, collectively titled Byrnanza, about the work of the musical genius David Byrne over the past thirty years.

David Byrne was full to overflowing in 1980. Talking Heads had just released Remain In Light, an album many still consider to be both their masterwork as a band and one of the musical high points of the ’80s. Remain In Light was heavily “world-beat” based, making use of Afrobeat and Arabic rhythms layered against abstract guitar and funk bass lines; the result was an album breathtaking in its innovation. Yet, by the time recording wrapped, Byrne wasn’t finished.

Ayuh Music, Special A/V Edition: Talking Heads and Jonathan Demme’s “Stop Making Sense”

This is the first in a series of three columns, collectively titled Byrnanza, about the work of the musical genius David Byrne over the past thirty years.

I was lucky enough to catch Stop Making Sense in its entirety at the Tyneside Cinema this past weekend. I’d seen bits of pieces of it before, and there’s lots of it on YouTube all chopped up, but I can now safely say that there is NOTHING like watching it from beginning to end.
