USA’s fast-paced, lawyer show Suits quickly hooked me when I began watching. Early on, the series centered on the professional relationship and friendship between hot-shot lawyer Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) and his genius protégé Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams) who poses as a Harvard graduate at what is then the Pearson Hardman law firm. It’s your typical dude bro buddy show in a lot of ways with dubious applications of law to set it apart. But, this series featured the showstopper Jessica Pearson portrayed by my queen Gina Torres. Torres’s portrayal of one of very few Black women, real or fictional, to have her name on the door of a major law firm glued me in every week for two seasons.
Then the Suits writers damn near ruined it. Read More How “Suits” Almost Lost Me
So it’s the summer finale and I feel bereft at the thought of going months without knowing what’s going on with my favorite lawyers, fake lawyers, paralegals and legal assistants. This episode ties up many of the story lines running throughout the first part of the season, though we’re left with an emotional cliffhanger involving a pair who have been dancing around each other all season. The downside of vacation is that when a person returns from vacation, they are faced with two things; 1) the jarring reality that the must return to their day-to-day life and 2) they have some TV watching to catch up on (if that’s they’re thing). It’s becoming apparent how much of an anchoring presence Donna was in the life of Harvey Spectre as we see him make incredible gambles (literally) and become increasingly fixated on the idea of winning at all costs. Though Donna’s absence is disheartening to those of us who loved her, we do get to Jessica being the ultimate HBIC. This episode shows that women can be just as ambitious and ruthless as men. Donna. Oh, Donna. This week’s episode put one of my favorite characters through the wringer and by the end, my heart was broken and all my feelings were left shattered on the floor. Sometimes the choices we make in a moment of desperation or to protect someone else lead to dire consequences. Read More New Show Recap: Suits, Episode 2.05, “Break Point”
After a brief break, this week’s episode features the return of an adversary of Harvey’s from last season, the blossoming and demise of a bromance, and what may be a turning point for one of my favorite characters. Unfortunately as a whole, this episode was light on giving viewers time with the awesome women of the show, but it did set the stage for what is hopefully a nice character arc for Harvey’s right hand woman.
