Ask UfYH: There’s No Right Way to Clean

Don’t get me wrong; there are plenty of ineffective ways to clean, but most of them involve whatever you’re cleaning ending up dirtier than when you started. For almost everything, though, there’s no one correct way to clean something, and thinking that there is just leads to a whole lot of nothing getting done. Ask UfYH: Roommates, Redux

Q: I live with a woman who, to put it nicely, is the roommate from hell. Her stuff is all over the place, she hogs the laundry machines, her dishes stay in the sink for weeks, and she never does her half of the regular chores (taking out the trash, vacuuming, etc.). I’ve left her a million notes asking her to do things, and she just ignores them, and then decides to do things on her own time and gets mad at me for not helping! What do I do?

A: Stop leaving notes. Read More Ask UfYH: Roommates, Redux

Ask UfYH: Enough With the Passive-Aggressive Bullshit

Q: So my bedroom is, and has been, ungodly messy my whole life. Whenever I have cleaned my room, someone (usually my mom) always has the comment, “Oh, it’s clean, now only if it’ll stay that way” or something along those lines. IDK why, but this makes me mad beyond life. To the point that even though I want my room to be clean, I don’t want to do it just so I don’t get that comment. Do you have any idea why this is so upsetting to me?

A: Because it’s a shitty thing to say to someone? Read More Ask UfYH: Enough With the Passive-Aggressive Bullshit

Ask UfYH: Roommate Sabotage?

Q: I’ve recently started trying to get my apartment clean, and my roommates are sabotaging my efforts. Every time I clean something, it’s messed up again by the next day. They leave their dirty dishes around after I’ve just run the dishwasher. How do I convince them to stop sabotaging me?

A: This is one of those times when I need to tell you something sort of blunt that will both make things better and make things worse: they aren’t sabotaging you. They either don’t notice, or they don’t care. Read More Ask UfYH: Roommate Sabotage?
