Friends, when you read this, I’ll be taking my first trip to New York City as an adult, so this week’s Record Machine is as indulgent as ever. And with all due respect to Frank Sinatra, let’s listen to a few other city-centric tunes.
The Verve’s 12” single for “The Drugs Don’t Work” is one of the few ’90s-era records in my collection. Featuring shimmering strings and longing lyrics, the song is one of my favorites from their 1997 album, Urban Hymns.
My favorite releases for 2006 seem to alternate between the All-Time Favorites I am constantly trying to shove into your hands, and the lovely gems that I keep meaning to own”¦ after which I will then metaphorically foist upon you like the rest. Let’s get to it!
People, wasn’t 2000 only just yesterday? I swear that it was, even though I was still in high school then and still driving Sid The Angry Volvo (R.I.P.), and even though the musicians in some of these videos look like babies in comparison to now, 2000 just happened. Don’t spoil my illusion just yet.
Songs that start with The Letter N (somewhat predictably) often have the words “Never” and “New York” in their titles. We’ve got that here, plus some ’90s classics. Get in.
