I am such a sucker for a good biopic. My favorite films include Selena and La Bamba, and I even love the fake ones like Velvet Goldmine. Book Review: “Making Piece: A Memoir of Love, Loss, and Pie”

When I’m stressed out,  I bake. My repertoire consists of exactly two goods: banana muffins (slightly updated recipe from my mom’s circa-1970’s cookbook) and chocolate chip cookies (back of the Trader Joe’s chocolate chip bag, slightly updated from Nestle). I have my limits, sure. But it’s hard to dispute this form of coping. It’s cheaper than therapy. It endears me to my coworkers and makes my friends happy. This Just In: Blackface Totally Okay Again

I must have missed the memo, but at some point blackface apparently became okay again. I thought we’d called a moratorium on it, but no, there’s Billy Crystal doing an impression of Sammy Davis, Jr. at the Academy Awards. Even more telling is a look at all the comments pouring in trying to excuse the bit. Whether you want to argue that Crystal was not actually wearing blackface because he was impersonating a real black person and not mocking an entire race of people, the fact remains that Crystal put makeup on his face to darken his skin to make him appear more like a black person. A Non-Movie Buff Recaps the Golden Globes

Saturday afternoon girlfriends and I were exchanging emails, working out a time to get together. We decided that Sunday night was perfect, with Monday being a non-school day for most offspring, a late night would be ok. It wasn’t until late Sunday afternoon that someone pointed out the Golden Globes were going to be on, and would we be watching them?
