Twelfth Doctor 101

It has now been one week since the identity of the Twelfth Doctor was released. Has it really only been a week? I guess a week is a long time on Tumblr. In any case, we now know that Peter Capaldi will be playing the twelfth incarnation of the Doctor on the BBC’s long-running sci-fi series, Doctor Who. Suddenly, a lot of Doctor Who fans have been made aware of Peter Capaldi and they might be wondering where to look for his previous performances. Here are some recommendations for what you might watch to become familiar with Mr. Capaldi and his acting chops.

Retro Recap: “The Thick of It,” Episode 3.08

We have now reached my final recap of The Thick of It. Since I’ve already recapped the fourth season when it was actually airing last fall, this is the final episode that needs to be recapped. As you might imagine, episode 8 of season 3 is rather emotionally charged because of what occurred in the previous episode. Let’s jump right in and see how the third season closes and what happens to these characters.

Retro Recap: “The Thick of It,” Episode 3.07

Well, folks, here we are. This is the episode that contains a humongous climax moment of The Thick of It. If you haven’t watched it yet and don’t want spoilers, I would suggest clicking away from this recap. I think that this episode shocks everyone who watches it for the first time because it’s not something we expected would happen. But, when looking back at previous episodes, it’s interesting to see how everything converges to this point. I can’t think of any more vague ways to talk about this, so let’s dive into the meat of the episode. Spoilers abound!

Retro Recap: The Thick of It, Episode 3.06

In the sixth episode of Season Three, we see several definite signs that the regime that’s been in power all throughout the series is coming to an end. People in the DoSAC office are talking candidly about “the end,” the PM’s popularity is flagging, and Malcolm finds himself in a bit of trouble when he makes several wrong calls. Several times during this episode, Malcolm describes the situation at Number 10 as being toxic and it’s clear that public opinion is turning against the party. This episode gives us a look into what happens to a small, rather insignificant department (DoSAC) when the popularity of the Government takes a downturn.

Retro Recap: The Thick of It, Episode 3.05

Welcome to another recap of The Thick of It. In the fifth episode of season three, Nicola Murray finds herself on BBC Radio’s “Five Live” program alongside her opposite number, Peter Mannion. Radio host Richard Bacon, played by himself, facilitates the “debate” that quickly turns to politics as usual, mudslinging, and spreading the blame around. This is easily one of my favorite episodes in the entire series because of its quotable lines, extraordinary performances from everyone in the ensemble cast, and moments of utter comedy gold.

Retro Recap: “The Thick of It,” Episode 3.04

Welcome back to my weekly recaps of The Thick of It! After a short holiday hiatus, I’m back to writing up my favorite British political satire this show. In the episode we’re recapping this week, some new themes are explored that haven’t really been touched upon before. Nicola Murray is, after all, as much a mother as she is a Minister for Her Majesty’s Government. As such, she has to deal with the dual responsibilities of raising a family and managing her public image (with the profanity-laden aid of Malcolm Tucker). With the scrutiny she’s already received in the press, what will happen if some news about her children breaks?

Retro Recap: “The Thick of It,” Episode 3.03

We are now three episodes into the third season of The Thick of It and I think this is the episode where we begin to see Malcolm’s downfall. It will take the rest of the season for him to reach rock bottom, but I believe this is the first step toward the explosive event that occurs in the penultimate episode of Season Three. This episode takes place during a party political conference in Eastbourne and several important things take place here. Firstly, Malcolm underestimates the power of the new, online media forces. Secondly, he makes some poor judgments regarding his own image. Lastly, we can see that support for Malcolm’s party, which has been in power for quite some time now, is beginning to wane.

Retro Recap: “The Thick of It,” Episode 3.02

If Nicola Murray thought that dealing with Malcolm’s baptism of fire was rough, I’d like to warn her that it was only the beginning. With the new minister installed at her post and the department no longer in upheaval, the time is right for another crisis! And what a crisis it is – a large amount of data has been irretrievably lost from the department. What will Malcolm do when he finds out? And what will the repercussions be for Nicola and her staff? Let’s dive right in!
