Senator Olympia Snowe to Retire from the Senate

Earlier this week and to the surprise of pretty much everyone, Maine Senator Olympia Snowe announced that she would not be running for re-election this year. Snowe has served as Senator since 1994, when she became the first woman to have served in both houses of a State Senate as well as both houses of Congress. Women’s History Month: Carol Moseley Braun

Carol Moseley Braun was the first African-American woman to be elected to the United States Senate, where she served from 1993-1999.  As of today, she is the only African-American woman ever to serve in the U.S. Senate, the only woman ever to defeat an incumbent in a senate race and the only woman senator ever elected from Illinois.  Read More Women’s History Month: Carol Moseley Braun
