Happy February First! Today marks the 32nd day of the year, the beginning of Black History Month, and Clark Gable’s birthday.
Clark Gable was born in 1901, and he was in his thirties when he starred in Gone with the Wind. Interesting tidbit: he becameĀ friends with Hattie McDaniel, whose role as Mammy in Gone with the Wind earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress (and was the first African-American to win an Oscar). Gable felt such an alliance to McDaniel, that he threatened to boycott the Atlanta premiere if McDaniel was not allowed to attend. It was only at McDaniel’s prompting that he attended, although she was not allowed in the white-only theater.
