Since last week’s roadside attraction trivia was so obscure, I have decided to go easy on you this week.
I am a huge sucker for VH1’s “100 Greatest Songs” lists. The Mister and I have been known to kill a whole Saturday watching one of their marathons and bickering about who should have been higher/lower on the lists. For this week’s test of trivialities, I am giving you VH1’s top ten songs of the ’90s. All you have to do is give me the artists.
10. “Nothing Compares 2 U”
9. “Losing My Religion”
8. “Waterfalls”
7. “…Baby One More Time”
6. “Baby Got Back”
5. “Vogue”
4. “I Will Always Love You”
3. “I Want It That Way”
2. “One”
*Bonus – If you can’t name #1 song and artist without any clues then I will be forced to confiscate your “I Love the ’90s” card.
And here’s one of my personal favorites. Coming in at #59 – “Buddy Holly” by Weezer

define a decade: smells like teen spirit. the song that no one who was listening knew it was making fun of them (at least not until years later when we grew up).
Sinead O’Connor, REM, TLC, Britney Spears, Sir Mix-A-Lot, En Vogue, Whitney Houston, Backstreet Boys, U2, and the #1 is “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana.
ETA: Vogue by Madonna, not Vogue by En Vogue!
Oh such a trip down memory lane — the 90s took me from highschool, through college and into my first few years as a young career girl.
#! has to be “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, because that’s what the 90’s smell like to me!
I believe that is the smell of stale smoke and wet flannel.
Stale clove smoke.
Well aren’t we fancy :)
Ha! In my head both the 90s and teen spirit smell like clove cigarettes.
Okay so stale smoke, wet flannel, and CK One for me.
10. Nothing Compares 2 U – Sinead O’Connor
9. Losing My Religion – R.E.M.
8. Waterfalls – T.L.C.
7. …Baby One More Time – Brit-Brit Spears
6. Baby Got Back – Sir Mix-A-Lot
5. Vogue – Madonna
4. I Will Always Love You – Whitney Houston from the Bodyguard soundtrack
3. I Want It That Way – Backstreet Boys
2. One – U2
I’m gonna have to take a stab in the dark for VH1’s favorite 90s song. I doubt it’s a rap or pop song as most of the pop has already been named in the top 10. I guess that leaves rock music, and I can’t think of a band that had more to do with rock in the 90s than Nirvana. I think that’s also keeping with Vh1’s tastes in music, too. My guess is that it’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Here we are now, entertain us.
Number one has gotta be Smells Like Teen Spirit… right?
I was sure Platy was right below until you posted that. Or would it be something poppier?
I don’t know if I trust VH1 that much, but that song pretty much defines the 90s.
I guess I could just fill out the rest, too.
10. Sinead O’Connor
9. REM
8. TLC
7. Britney Spears
6. Sir Mix-a-Lot
5. Madonna
4. Whitney Houston
3. Backstreet Boys
2. U2
1. Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit
Most definitely.
If I remember the marathons correctly it is Smells Like Teen Spirit. If I also remember correctly I was always annoyed by that because I think Nirvana has better songs than that one.
Nirvana had MUCH better songs. But that one song redefined teen angst in a whole new way.
OH why didn’t I think of that… I never listened to Nirvana, but even Weird Al made a parody of that song…
9. “Losing My Religion†– REM
8. “Waterfalls†– TLC

My guess for #1: “Creep” by Radiohead.
