Persephone Lounge is Open to Cheese

…Cheesy songs, that is. Well, I think we’re open to actual cheese too. But since the weather is finally warming up for a lot of people, I was inspired to post this lovely song from the totally not-cheesy television program, The Brady Bunch. God I love watching things like this and picking out who in the group had trouble with the dancing. And by dancing I mean swaying a little bit and occasionally switching your mic from one hand to the other.

Anyway, the point is, I hope everyone has a Sunshine Day of their own this weekend, and we’ll see you in the comments!

I took my bike in for a tune up like two and a half weeks ago (after a long stretch of not using it for various reasons), and I bought a new helmet and everything. And this weekend, I got an odometer/speedometer and a new squishy seat cover, and I am all pumped to start working my way up to being able to bike to work (3.5 miles each way). But now the weather won’t stop sucking!

I mean, I love snow as much as the next girl, but if you’re going to snow and be cold and gloomy, snow and be cold and gloomy. None of this 50 degrees one day, 25 the next! Boooooooo!

I spent most days at work wanting to be at home so I can play on the computer. Usually that means Guild Wars, but I’ve lately been playing Dragon Age: Origins (I helped save Redcliffe from the undead last night, bitches!). Once I get home, however, the last thing I want to do is be on the computer. Poopy. I wish my job was to play games all day. ;)

This is completely unrelated to my previous comment but I thought I’d share because it’s quite funny. Certain sites and content are blocked at work. So if we try to access a forbidden site, we get this message:

The End of the Internet
Congratulations! This is the last page.
Thank you for visiting the End of the Internet. There are no more links.
You must now turn off your computer and go do something productive.
Go read a book, for pete’s sake!

I had a nice weekend but then my landlords went and spoilt it. I’ve been living in this old but big flat for 10 years now. The rent has been very reasonable and I love the area. The block is owned by a very old lady and now her children are managing the place. Very little maintenance work was done – which I’m sort of ok with because of the low rent – and the place is quite rundown.

So now they’re going to fix a few things because they HAVE to and they’re doing the bare minimum. For instance, they only want to paint over especially bad patches and not do the whole flat.

And then this morning, when I spoke to one of the daughters-in-law about having the whole flat painted, she says she has to speak to the brothers in the family because “we don’t know yet what we’re going to do with the flat so we don’t want to do a lot of work”. Which I take to mean they’re either going to hike the rent sky-high or sell the place.

The area I live in really expensive and so far I’ve been fortunate to find reasonably priced flats for rent. I know this is the incentive to buy my own place, even though I can only afford a shoebox-sized place in this area. So I’m trying to be positive about this.

Moving out of this area is simply not an option for me. I’ve lived here for nearly 17 years, it’s close to work, my sister, my doctors, the shops, the vet, everything. I can’t emphasise how distressing it would be to move out to the suburbs.

I just hope that the landlords will give me a reasonable notice period before doing anything.

Well, Game of Thrones. Pretty entertaining. A little concerned that maybe it was too much story building instead of story telling, but I guess that’s the way it has to be when the source material is as dense as it is. And not gonna lie, digging the dudes with shaggy hair, beards, and even a little (a lot?) make-up. Jason Mamoa is perfect for Khal Drogo. Can’t wait to see what happens with him and Daenerys next episode. That story line is pretty epic.

Tell me oh internet oracle, should I sign up for a tumblr? On the one hand, I don’t really care for the idea but on the other hand it’s getting to the point where I’m starting to check enough tumblr pages with enough regularity that it seems silly not to.

Plus some of my favorite internet people seem to have migrated there and if the cool kids are doing it then I want to do it too.

So, I went out for dinner with my uncle and his new g.f. who is an ex ballerina. And she totally body-snarked me twice at dinner. For what it’s worth, I am a very healthy young gal, I run, cycle, do judo, and lift weights and eat veggies and whole grains, I am definitely not dancer-thin, but I am toned and fit. But that shouldn’t matter anyway, because she was meeting me for the first time, and in my world, you don’t snark people about their bodies ever, but especially not someone you just met. I know I am healthy and not fat, but her comments made me feel like a woolly mammoth and it just sucks, because my Uncle whom I am super close to clearly really likes her… and I have to pretend to like her too.

I deem this weekend a success! We went on our walk to the ice cream parlor and had a really good time, plus we walked around the park for awhile too. I started using a pedometer on Thursday, mostly just for fun but also to try to get 10,000 steps like they say you’re supposed to. I got about 11,000 yesterday and 15,000 today. Woop woop! I am feeling great about some healthier choices I’ve been making. Gooo me!

you can get pedometers for pretty cheap, like $10. I think they have fancier ones too, but I don’t know if they’re worth it. I have the little ipod nano and it has a pedometer on it that seems to be fairly accurate.
It’s fun! It gives you a little goal for the day.

Since I’m doing everything in my power to avoid working on my writing portfolio (because the story I’m working on is emotionally taxing), question: did anyone see Your Highness? I went to it last night, and I have to say, James Franco? Still delightful in spite of all the internet hate.

Also, does laughing out loud through the whole movie make me a bad person? Because I did and I wasn’t even stoned (and it’s even kind of icky and uncomfortable in some scenes), although the people in front of me clearly were which actually made the movie even funnier. Nothing like stoners laughing at really dumb stuff to make you giggle.

The activity I spent the most time and energy on this weekend: Pokemon. I am not at all ashamed. I now have 4 Tepigs, and will tonight be getting an Oshawatt that I can start breeding. Goal: to have one of each evolution of each starter pokemon in my bank, so I can help friends to complete their Pokedexes. Also, to have one of each to trade back to my farming copy (along with some other strong pokemans) so that I can race through the game.

I might stream it later (in theory) because I don’t have HBO. I’ve read the first book, pretty great, but got sidetracked before I got into the rest of the series. Everyone says it’s pretty fantastic though and I have to admit I like (at least in the first book) Martin’s ruthless writing. Nothing sentimental there, kind of delightful in a sick way.

Also, a recap is a brilliant idea! I’m sure they’ll be doing it on io9 if they aren’t actually live-blogging it.

ah, good idea. I will keep an eye out over there.

I am enjoying the ruthlessness too. Also the set-up is epic – you can just sense that there isn’t any resolution coming for a long, long time.

I was interested in the geographical similarities to Garth Nix’s Abhorsen series – although they were published within a year of each other so plagiarism is probably unlikely…
