Rolling Till The Open Thread Ends

Y’all, I can’t stop listening to this Adele/Britney Spears mashup. Approximately 100 of the views on this YouTube video are from me.  Dance along with me and catch up with your frayns in tonight’s open thread!

I don’t know where this came from (yes, my inbox, but before that) but I love it.

Mamihlapinatapai (sometimes spelled mamihlapinatapei) is a word from the Yaghan language of Tierra del Fuego, listed in The Guinness Book of World Records as the “most succinct word”, and is considered one of the hardest words to translate. It refers to “a look shared by two people, each wishing that the other would initiate something that they both desire but which neither wants to begin.”

‘Mamihlapinatapai, you say? Hmmm, how do you spell that?’

Today was (still is) my birthday. Is it me, or are actual birthdays always disappointing? Thankfully I had a kickass party on Saturday, but today was a regular workday with slightly colder weather than I’d like for April, punctuated by a spat with a friend that really was just a miscommunication. Ick. Then tomorrow I just settle for being 27. Ignore the pity party, sorry.

I’ll join your pity party if there’s place for one more. My birthday is next Monday, and I’m sulking over the fact that I’m here in Canada with cold, shitty weather instead of being home where April means flowers, warm weather and kick ass bbqs. That, and I still don’t have a very close group of friends here, so I think I’ll be at home downing a bottle of wine in my party dress. Maybe I’ll convince the man of the house to make me dinner…

(Happy belated birthday, by the way!)

Every once in a while, I have to think about and make a list of Things I’m Saving Up For. Tonight, I’m going to share some of that list with you, and I think it would be fun if you did the same.

1) French Curve tattoo (over my left kidney) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_curve) (I have been sewing since I was 9, and they are used in pattern-making) (This will be my first tattoo, and probably my only one)

2) The entire X-Men Animated Series on DVD so I can watch it in an awesome marathon weekend (note: might need to take several weekends).

3) A nice gray cardigan that goes with almost everything.

At the moment, my two cousins and I are saving for a trip together: instead of buying each other stuff for Christmas and birthdays, we pool our money together into a joint bank account. Aside from that, I don’t really save for stuff, but I do think it over for a long time before buying new things, and I’ve noticed that I’m evolving towards a more frugal/uncluttered life.

The french curve tattoo rocks! What colour would you get? I too have been thinking about tatoos lately, considering the idea of getting a literary one… But I’m debating about the visibility, the money and so on…

Whooooo go you! I got up ridiculously early this morning to look at an apartment, and totally didn’t feel like going… but the space is perfect. I called one other place to check it out and they haven’t called me back, so I think I’m just gonna go for it. A friend and I will probably be road-tripping to Ikea soon :)

*learn everyone’s name as fast as you can.
*go early and talk to the other second grade teachers, make sure you have a lesson plan and figure out what all the procedures are.
*in an emergency and you lose their collective attention, whisper.
*introduce yourself to the secretary, get to know her name and make sure to tell her goodbye. She’ll remember you if she needs a sub again.
*eat breakfast, drink coffee, take vitamin, put bottle of Excedrin in glove box.
*find a great book on the bookshelf and read to the kids if they do a good job for you.
*2nd graders don’t tend to test subs as much as older kids, but they’ll push the boundaries. Make sure you know the classroom rules and enforce them.
*have fun, 8 yr olds are really cool.

Yeah I blame you for this song being in my iTunes rotation now. I love a good mash up. I use to go to a bar/club and they played the BEST mash up of Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin’ and Lady Gaga’s Just Dance. I have yet to find a version on youtube that matches the perfection of the one I spent many a night dancing to.

Getting settled after a move SUCKS. And is wicked expensive. I knew there was a reason I didn’t do it for almost 11 years. Tonight’s adventure: assembling the wrong height counter stools and trying to figure out how to get the dogs to stop “helping.” Tomorrow’s adventure: bringing back the wrong size stools, and maybe, just maybe, getting the right ones.
