Lunchtime Poll: 5/23

Happy Monday, readers! Hope you all had a great weekend! I mastered a useless game on my phone, watched Doctor Who (so much more on that later), and did some laundry.  I know, I know, it’s a wonder I keep up with all the excitement.

Today’s LTP is a little different.  We’re about to start advertising, now that we have numbers to support it without wasting anyone’s (including our) time.  We’re going to keep it classy, which means we’re only going to accept advertisements from companies we know are legit and worth supporting. We’re not accepting anything that makes it harder to read the site, so no roadblock ads you have to click past to get to the good stuff or obnoxious moving shit. In the meantime, I’m considering putting up a completely voluntary, no obligation at all Paypal link to help feed our server. Trust me, I know times are tight, and we only want you to give if it’s something you want to and are able to do.

We keep our costs as low as we can, but we’re already outgrowing our current set-up.  At the moment, we pay a little over $200 USD per month for our home.  We’re going to need to double that cost, by doubling our equipment, within the next couple of months if we keep growing at our current rate.

So today’s poll is this: will a Paypal link or site advertising change how you use the site? Our readers have never been afraid to tell us what they think (and we love you for that, most of the time) and we thought we’d bring you in on the discussion.  This may not be a time when we go with majority rule (ladybloggers need to eat), but we do want to hear what you have to say.

I promise Hattie will have a fun topic up again tomorrow.  : )

I think it’s a fine idea. God, no diet ads, please. I had enough issue with the pro-Weight Watchers post…I couldn’t handle constant reminders of how wrong my body is. Congratulations on your growth! I’m excited to see where it goes!

That was only a post about my opinion and my desire to lose weight. There was nothing in there that said I think that everyone should lose weight or go on a diet or even go on WW. Just because I want to lose weight does not mean I think anyone else needs to or has to lose weight. It’s not a criticism of your body, it’s a discussion of what has worked for me to become healthier.

Good! Because we want you here! I do understand what you’re saying about the diet industry, but I don’t want people to think that my desire to diet or lose weight is meant as a judgement about someone else’s body, because it’s really not, and we support all bodies here! :) Also, I wouldn’t want diet ads on here either!

I think ads would be fine, just not the kind that enlarge when you scroll near them so you end up accidentally clicking them instead of the link you were aiming for. Are those the same as roadblocks? They’re super annoying anyway. I’m glad to hear the site is growing! If there was a paypal link I’d do what I could to contribute, I’d think of it like paying a magazine subscription but with better content and no paper waste.

I definitely vote for the non-moving ads. Those flashy ones that you can’t stop actually give me a headache. I’ve stopped going to sites with those types of ads because they hurt so bad.

But non-moving, off to the side ads sound fine. (don’t tell the ad people this but I never actually pay attention to them anyway, sometimes I forget they are there)

The other option, if people don’t like ads, would be a benefactor willing to keep us in servers, nourishment, and unicorns because we’re so damn awesome. So if anyone knows anyone with deep pockets interested in investing in the hottest ladyblog in town, that would work, too. (*coughOprahcough*)

I agree. I’m a bit stingy so probably unlikely to contribute (sorry!). But ads wouldn’t bug me, and I’d trust you to not have ridiculous “Axe” ads or some crap like that. And please, none of those drop downs that cover the whole page and trick you into clicking!

Honestly, I’ve been expecting ads for a while now. As long as they don’t display the cognitive dissonance so often spied on Jezebel, I’m good with it.

And I’d totally send some money y’alls way if I had a steady income. Which, you know, I might still get eventually. 20 bucks every now and then to keep the site running wouldn’t hurt me that much.
