Thank you NYC for supporting a market for the artisan vegan doughnut. Dun-Well Doughnuts is the newest (and arguably most dapper) of a number of bakeries with vegan varieties. Below are some of my favorite bakeries serving up dairy-free doughnuts, along with a recipe to make some of your own.

My finest experience with vegan doughnut dining was at Portland’s VooDoo Doughnuts. Possibly one of the seven wonders of the vegan world, VooDoo Doughnuts offers incredibly tasty and creative doughnuts. A pink box full of a dozen vegan doughnuts is a glorious, glorious thing to behold, and many a traveling vegan has returned home with treasures to share.
Two other much loved bakeries that make vegan doughnuts include Vegan Treats and BabyCakes NYC with locations in both New York and California. Last year BabyCakes NYC won the Best Vegan Treat award for their vegan and gluten-free doughnuts. Their new cookbook, BabyCakes Covers the Classics, features a doughnut smack dab in the middle of the cover hogging the spotlight.
Developing a doughnut addiction can definitely be a bit pricey so should you choose to make your own, this VeganYumYum recipe for Mini Donuts with lots of friendly how-to videos and photos is a sure bet for a homemade goodness.
