Hello lovelies! I have been slightly obsessed with Words With Friends lately, which is an iPhone Scrabble-like app for those who don’t play, and so I have also been slightly obsessed with weird words. Along with my growing arsenal of two-letter words with high point-values (hello qi, ka, and jo), I found a list of country names that are legal on the Scrabble board. All of the following countries are not necessarily proper nouns. Do you know what they mean when you take away their capitals?
- Chile
- China
- Turkey
- Chad
- Panama
- Japan
- Brazil
- Guinea
- Morocco
- Tonga
And now, for something completely different, feel free to dance your way through the open thread.
Thanks to the good folks at Sporcle for the trivia idea :)

There’s no better safety dance than a Turk Safety Dance.
I’m eating Reese peanut butter cups and watching True Blood. Life’s good.
You’ve got me on chad, japan, morocco, and tonga!
guinea as in the old English coin is the only one I haven’t seen mentioned yet.
A chad is the little piece of paper leftover when you punch out a perforated section (or leave it hanging, as the case was during the 2000 election when I learned the word).
I have never ever heard that before! Amazing, thank you:)
ooh!!
chile (pepper), china (plate!), turkey (food), panama (hat?), brazil (nut?), morocco (instrument?)
oh no wait the last one would be maraca.
I love words with friends! FYI – za, xi, and ex are great words.
I only know the obvious ones – china (as in plates), turkey (gobble gobble), and chad (as in hanging). I would guess guinea from guinea pig. This list may come in handy ::bookmarks:: Thanks!
I’m also very fond of qua. It fits into tiny TW spaces. :)
Qi and qat are other good ones when you’re stuck with a Q and no Us for ages.
