Funtime Open Thread: One Hit Wonders

Tonight we will be flashing back to some of the fantastically awesome one hit wonders of the 1980s.  As always, VH1’s Top 100 list is my go-to source, but this time I’ve scoured the entire list for some of the most memorable singles instead of keeping to the top ten or twenty.  I’ll warn you now, it’s not going to be easy.  The curse of the one hit wonder is that, while everyone may have heard of your song, there’s a good chance that they’ve never heard of you.  I give you all a free Google pass on this one.  I go crazy when I can’t remember the name of a band, and I don’t want you to have to suffer all night.  Good luck (VH1’s top 100 ranking is in parentheses after the title):

  1. Johnny Are You Queer? (81)
  2. Major Tom (68)
  3. Dear God (62)
  4. Puttin’ On the Ritz (53)
  5. Der Kommissar (51)
  6. Mexican Radio (44)
  7. I Know What Boys Like (34)
  8. Turning Japanese (30)
  9. Our House (29)
  10. The Safety Dance (17)
  11. 99 Luftballoons (16)
  12. She Blinded Me With Science (13)
  13. Too Shy (9)
  14. I Melt With You (7)
  15. Take on Me (3)

*Bonus: What is the #1 greatest one hit wonder of the ’80s?  Title and artist please.

I read through the whole list four times, specifically looking for this song, but somehow it did not make the cut.  I really don’t know how that happened, especially since I’m pretty sure it made the list of top 100 one hit wonders of all time.  Perhaps Falco simply transcends time.

Doing this old school without google!
(I may use my iTunes library for memory tweaking though)

Johnny Are You Queer? (81) – I have never heard of this song! How is that possible?
Major Tom (68) – Peter Schilling
Dear God (62) – XTC
Puttin’ On the Ritz (53) – Taco
Der Kommissar (51) – Falco
Mexican Radio (44) – Wall of Voodoo
I Know What Boys Like (34) – The Waitresses
Turning Japanese (30) – The Vapors
Our House (29) – Madness
The Safety Dance (17) – Men Without Hats
99 Luftballoons (16) – Nena
She Blinded Me With Science (13) – Thomas Dolby
Too Shy (9) – Kajagoogoo
I Melt With You (7) – Modern English
Take on Me (3) – a-ha

Bonus: Total Guess … Come of Eileen – Dexy’s Midnight Runners and the Emerald Express

Oh man this was tough. I have no idea on most of them. Our House is The Talking Heads I think. 99 luftballoons is Nina. Take on Me is A-Ha. She Blinded Me With Science is some guy’s name. Tommy Dobby. Dobberson. Tom Dolby? Something like that. For some reason I thought I Melt With You was The Cure? But they had more hits I thought. Ugh IDK. The Safety Dance is Men Down Under? Men Working Above? Men Something.
ANd that’s all I got!
I’ve never even heard of Johnny Are You Queer.

Guys… the big “category” bars make me uncomfortable. I don’t know where else to say it, but… I legit can’t scroll for article titles, and that makes me sad.

When I am scrolling, my eyes only see the words in the category bar things. Maybe if they were over the titles? So it’s like “FOOD: This is an article about food.” I don’t know. I hate to just come in the OT to whine, but sometimes I guess it’s gotta happen.
