Lunchtime Poll

Today’s question is easy: long hair or short?

I really love having long hair, but every time it reaches a certain length I get the urge to cut it all off.  I don’t think it has anything to do with wanting short hair or making it easier to manage, I just really like the feeling of wild abandon I get from cutting off twelve inches of hair all at once.

Long. My hair is curly, but I don’t like it curly and short so if it’s not long I am always straightening it. I chopped it off a couple years ago, and I’ve finally gotten even my bangs to the point again where I can get away with not straightening them. My poor hair is so damaged from all the heat.

Sometimes I miss my long hair, but cutting it short is probably the best thing I ever did. It’s a lot easier to take care of day to day, and while I do have to get it cut more often, I think it’s generally more flattering for my face. I just wasn’t good at taking the time to straighten or do anything with my long frizzy hair and I feel like I’d just end up hiding behind it.

When I originally chopped it all off I took in Jean Seberg from Breathless as a reference picture. I’d say right now I generally get it cut even a little shorter than that.

I got compliments when my hair was longer. But I never knew how to style it and I felt like it always looked like an unimpressive mane. I’ve usually had chin-length or shorter hair and I think that’s an easier length for me to manage and style in a way that looks good.

I love my hair long. I don’t do much with gels or sprays or styling, but I love braiding my hair or getting it braided by others. I have cut it off a few times out of annoyance and then I spend torturous months waiting for it to grow long enough to braid again. I really can’t stand having it shorter than shoulder-length and prefer it to be about boob-length.

I got my first pixie cut at 14, so I missed out on all the long-hair-related experimenting that my friends were doing at the time (different lengths, colours, hairdos and so on). Then when I was 22 I decided to grow it out in a misguided attempt to “reinvent” myself (yeah, I know), but I soon realized that I didn’t know what to do with it, so I wore it in a ponytail every single day for several months, and then cut it short again.

Since I was about 16, I’ve been going through a cycle of growing my hair very long and then cutting it into a chin-length bob. I agree that cutting of a foot of hair is wildly exhilarating. The part I hate, of course, is the growing out stages in between. :) My hair is extremely long again right now and I’m pretty sure I’ll be whacking it off again soon. But long hair has it’s perks- I blow dry it less because it’s flat and straight anyway, and a bob always requires some styling. And I have this crazy love of the way it feels when I get out of the shower and it’s really heavy on my back.
