What The Hell Happened Around Here?

You may have noticed it looks a little different around here.  Or a lot different.  You also may have noticed that all our scheduled posts have run at the same time twice in the past week.  As it turns out, our old theme, mixed with BuddyPress, was adding so much junk to our database it was crippling everything.  Our host was strongly encouraging me to double our servers, but I decided to try free solutions first.

So I made some emergency changes.  Here are the highlights:

1. There is no more BuddyPress.  This means we lose the forums, but they were ghost towns.  We also lose the awards, but I can find an alternative way of surprising awesome people. This will fix the registration problem we have once and for all, and the number of new registrations I’m getting today tells me that was still a huge problem.

2. Your old avatars were also attached to BuddyPress, but I added a plug-in that lets you upload one in your profile.

3. I dumped a few other plugins, but I don’t think they’ll be too noticeable to most folks.

4. There’s no reason I can find why it’s still slow.  There are several new features under the hood which should, by all accounts, be making this forum run faster than an Indy car.  The admin area loads lightning fast. I’ll keep working.

D. As always, if you have comments, suggestions, or find a bug, let me know!

Maybe. I haven’t found a tool yet, but I’m looking. I sent a note to the theme designer asking for the option to be added to the box on the top of the sidebar.

We may be switching themes, and the one we’re looking at using is a LOT easier to tweak, so if Tumblr has that functionality in their API, I can make it work. I think.

I really like the small caps in the article titles! It’s still loading quite slowly for me, which I don’t understand (I have a solid, fast internet connection) but I don’t mind it all that much since I usually have multiple tabs open and can just click onto something else while it loads. Very sleek and pretty!

I agree also; my only dislike is the mixed caps. On the net, we’ve been conditioned to read caps as shouting, so the headings come across as being a bit too vehement for a topic like PISTACHIO LEMON PILAF. Also, bringing the headings down 1 size might help as well; there’s a big disparity between the body text and headline size. It would help those who use scale text size up or down in their browsers.

As for everything else, I love it!

I love love love everything about the new layout. Except the mixed caps headlines. They cause the headline to be read in a really choppy, clunky manner, and aesthetically I’ve never liked the look. I know the aesthetic thing is a personal preference, but there have been studies that show all caps text is actually harder for the reader to to process. People read more quickly and with a higher reading comprehension with standard capitalization because the human brain recognizes words not just by spelling, but also by shape!

I love 1, 2, 3, 4, D. :)

The site loads much faster for me. I never even noticed there were forums (glad to see I’m not alone). I noticed “awards” once but I didn’t have any :( and couldn’t figure out what they were given for, so I’ll only slightly notice their loss. All in all, I still love PM and especially the ever-changing slogan!
