Today’s 5 Books comes from one of our regular readers, Lisa H.
1. Which book would you give to a potential significant other?
Engine Summer, by John Crowley. It is weird, and not straightforward or mainstream by any stretch of the imagination, but it is beautifully evocative, and I would think it would be a good “test” of a potential partner ““ if they just saw it as weird and complicated, that’s a good indicator that they might find me”¦ not a good match.
2. Which book would you give to a high school senior?
Oh, the Places You’ll Go by Dr. Seuss. Everyone else probably will be giving practical things, and they may need a laugh.
3. Which book would you give to your political representatives?
Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass. I think they have lost touch with what was once beautiful and noble about this country, and Whitman still captures that for me.
4. Which book would you give to a former teacher?
Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States ““ because it stands on its head everything that I learned in school, and lord knows I wish public schools would teach a more realistic view of how our country came about.
5. Which book would you give to your best friend?
I have given her many books over the last 33 years, and vice versa, but right now I want to get her a copy of Shaun Tan’s What Miscellaneous Abnormality Is That? ““ which is not explainable; you’ll just have to look it up.
