Lunchtime Poll 9/6/11

I had a job interview today, and it was at a place with very limited space, so instead of sitting behind a desk, we just talked at a couch.  It was more casual than I’m used to, but it wasn’t bad. It did get me thinking about bad interviews. And today, I want to know your stories.

I think the worst interview I’ve ever been on was when the program director checked her Blackberry throughout the interview. I wish I had just walked out of that one. Another weird interview was when the program director asked if I had any mental illness diagnoses because they had a grant to hire people with mental illness. But that’s it for me; I don’t have any real horror stories from interviews. But I KNOW that some of you must, so let’s hear ’em!

There are no bad times, only good stories.

My only bad interviews have been with employers who seemed like they didn’t really know what they were doing. I know they must have interviewed people before, because all the other employees had to get there somehow, but I felt like I was the one doing the interviewing while they sat there and said “So, um, yeah, this is what we do here…”

Pro tip – if you ever do get a job after an interview like this, there’s a very good chance that the trend of management being kind of distracted and flaky will continue into your employment. Things like boundaries and clear job descriptions will become fantastic mythical creatures.
