Persephone Bracket

Persephone Fall Bracket 2011 – Supporting Character in Drama Nominations

We’ve already got quite an impressive list of nominees for the First Annual Persephone Bracket That Needs A Good Name, honoring the baddest bad asses on television, past or present.  To make sure we get everyone in the running that needs to be, we’ll be running a couple of nomination threads early this week, then we’ll start narrowing the field on Thursday and Friday.

To recap: Much like our very successful Middlemarch Madness, the fall bracket will determine Persephone’s favorite lady TV character by creating a bracket of 64 contenders. These 64 will be divided into four groups of 16, leading lady characters in drama, leading lady characters in comedy/variety, supporting lady characters in drama and supporting lady characters in comedy/variety.

We’ve got a pretty good list of leading ladies (you’ll get a chance to add to that list on Wednesday) so today and tomorrow we’re going to nominate supporting ladies, with drama today and comedy/variety tomorrow.  I know some of you already included your supporting lady votes, so I’ll list the ladies already mentioned below.

River Tam (Firefly)

Cordelia Chase (BTVS and Angel)

Lisa Cuddy  (House)

Daenerys Targaryen and Cersei (Game of Thrones)

Kira Nerys (DS9)

Sierra (Dollhouse)

Pam (True Blood)

River Song (Doctor Who)

Donna Noble (Doctor Who)

Martha Jones (Doctor Who)

Dr. Beverly Crusher (ST:TNG)

Willow Rosenberg (BTVS)

I’ve put Doctor Who companions in supporting and we’re making Zoe (Firefly) and CJ Cregg (The West Wing) in lead, because it just seems right.

So wow me with your noms for Baddest Badass Supporting Lady TV Character in Drama (save your funny/musical/variety ladies for tomorrow.)

Best Supporting Character: Drama

Callisto – Xena: Warrior Princess

Faith – Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Grace Van Owen – LA Law

Shirley Daniels – St. Elsewhere

Lilly Van der Woodsen Bass Humphrey – Gossip Girl

Rhoda Morgenstern – The Mary Tyler Moore Show (I can understand nominating her under her spinoff show, but she was not a lead on “Mary.”)

Roz – Night Court

Jade West – Victorious

Aunt Bea – The Andy Griffith Show

Florence Johnston – The Jeffersons

Would Olivia Benson from Law & Order: SVU be considered leading or supporting? Questions, questions! Either way, I’d like to nominate her. At the very least, Casey Novak and Alexandra Cabot (two of the many ADAs from the show) are definitely bad ass and count as supporting lady characters.

Longtime lurker here. I have to disagree with Daenerys Targaryen being in the supporting section. She’s a full blown leading lady. If it isn’t apparent from the TV series (I havn’t finished watching it yet, but it should be obvious by the last episode if they did it right), it’s very apparent in the books. Game of Thrones is kind of tough because there are so many character lines.

True, true. I was also going to start hollering that Cersei isn’t a badass she’s evil, EVIL I tell you! But then I remembered that she is portrayed in a far rosier light in the show. I agree with you that Arya should be included. She’s an ultimate badass.

I would like to formally register a complaint with the idea that the Doctor Who companions count as “Supporting.”

Aside from that, here are some nominations for Best Supporting Drama Badass:

Donna Moss (West Wing)

Arya Stark (Game of Thrones)

Joan Halloway (Mad Men)

Callie (BSG)

Juliet (Lost)

….. I can’t believe I can’t think of others?
