So, one of my favorite things in the world is playing Spa at home, but have you ever been up and down the home-spa bath pampering aisle at your drug or grocery store or one of those fancy Bath and Skincare places in the mall? Shit’s expensive.
Which is why, of course, it’s pretty much essential that you learn how to make your own sugar scrub at home. It’s hell of a lot cheaper than the store-bought stuff over time, you can adapt it to lots of different needs, and you probably already own most if not all of the ingredients necessary. Ready?
- sugar (I used white & brown together in equal parts)
- oil (but not mineral oil – that stuff dries your skin out)
- essential oils of whatever you want to smell and smell like
In a container (Tupperware works well, or an old cleaned out jar with a lid is fine, too; you’ll want something you can put oil into and that you can get wet), mix up your sugars with a spoon. I mixed 1/3 cup of each. You want to use sugar rather than salt because salt stings like a motherfucker on any open wounds, including slight cuts from shaving or open bug bites.
Then, dump in about 1 tbsp. of honey. Mix the honey into the sugar with your fingertips. It’s very sticky, and it will take a little while, but it makes your fingers feel nice. The reason you add honey is that honey has natural healing properties in it that will help repair some of those cuts we mentioned, and is also good for burns and things like that. Plus, it feels nice.
Next, slowly, saturate the mixture with oil, stirring it in as you go. You want the oil to sugar ratio to end up about even; you don’t want the oil to make your scrub into a gritty soup, but you do want it to penetrate your sugars so that you get the benefit of some oil moisturizing and to help the sugars not be quite so rough on your skin. Just try to find a balance. To cut back on dishes, I stirred mine with the handle-end of the spoon.
Finally, add essential oils. I did lemon, because all citrus essential oils are good for fighting depression, and lavender, for calming and relaxation. Here’s the thing about essential oils: because they are made of the essence of whatever they’re made of, when you breathe them in you’re actually getting tiny particles of whatever the substance is through your nose and into your body. That is how they are so effective in aromatherapy. Those “aromatherapy” candles and such don’t really do the same thing, because there are no essential oils entering your nasal passages. You would actually get more “aromatherapy” benefits out of eating lavender (like in a salad) than you would out of an aromatherapy candle. There’s my two cents on that.
When everything is mixed, it’s ready to use. Note: do not add artificial coloring. It will dye your skin, and really, the honey-brown color of this scrub is kind of pleasant on its own.
Lather your rough, dry, scaly, flaky patches up with this scrub. Part of the therapy of using a scrub like this is just the chance to get your hands on your body in a loving, nurturing manner. The scrub itself is nice on razor-burned legs, light sunburns (not really bad sunburns!), chronically dry joints, etc. Once you’ve rubbed it all the way in and have done what you can to use the sugar to exfoliate, step into the shower; rinse with lukewarm water, and then pat dry.
