I grew up someplace very warm and now live someplace very cold. When I first got here, 50 degrees felt like the bitterest of winter, but now I am an expert on things that will keep you from freezing, stylishly.
1. A light coat: You’ll need one of these for those 50 degree days ““ something that keeps your shoulders from freezing on a walk but that isn’t going to make you sweat once you get going. A trench coat is classic and never goes out of style. If you want an edgier look, a leather jacket is the perfect fall accessory.
2. A nice coat for cold days: One of the glorious things about winter is that you can look like a total slob, put a coat on, and suddenly you loook like you’ve put so much thought into your outfit. A tailored coat is essential winter wear. Something in warm, tightly woven wool with a toasty lining is what you want. The pea coat never really goes out of style. Make yours pop by choosing a color like red or yellow. I love a good swing coat, too. And if money were no object, this delightful Burberry Prorsum coat would keep me toasty.
3. Something really, really warm: Let’s face it, when it’s 20 below and you have to walk someplace, you want something that is toastier than a pile of kittens. For warm, you want puffy, but you needn’t look like the Michelin Man. The North Face makes these lovely, warm coats that look just fine for every day.
What coats will you be tossing over your sweats to go to the grocery store this winter?

I am a big proponent of the down vest. It’s good with a sweater as an outside ensemble in the late fall, it keeps me warm while I am working on my dissertation in my chilly basement suite, and it can go under other jackets in the winter.
There is nothing better than a down vest. Absolutely nothing. Keeps the core warm while the arms are free of the bulk of a jacket. Living in Florida, I don’t have many occasions to wear mine anymore :(
Where are you in Florida? I did my masters at FSU, though I have returned to Canada for my PhD, Tallahassee is not down vest appropriate, which sort of broke my Canadian heart. :P
Sally, the next time I go shopping, I’m going to be texting you an unreasonable number of pictures. “Does this look ok? How about this? Am I stylish yet?”
I am a terribly unfashionable person.
I hate you because a new winter coat is not in my budget this year. Also, I wish I was the type of girl who could wear that brown coat with the fur. I love that style, but if I got it I would have to buy a whole new wardrobe to match it.
You wouldn’t need a whole wardrobe because you would just wear the coat and it would make even your jeggings look high class.
