Ah, the burpee. Also known as the squat-thrust. The bastard child of a squat and a push-up, with a bit of a jump at the end, it’s deceptively simple, yet throughly ass-kicking. It requires little room and no equipment aside from your body. In short, the perfect exercise for an open challenge!
Here’s a really good demonstration of what the burpee should look like, for those that are awesome and can do a strict push-up, and those of us (myself included) that need to use their knees to do the push-up part:
So, here’s the challenge that I present to anyone who’s interested in joining along: For the next 100 days, you do one burpee for each day. Day one, you do one, on day two, you do two, one day 34, you do 34, and so on. They don’t need to be done all at once, so if you need to break it up into sets, that’s fine. Just as long as you do all of them in a 24 hour period. If you miss a day, you can “buy back” into it by making up ALL of the previous days’ (yes, days) burpees. For example, if you miss day 17, you will need to do 17, 16, 15, 14,…3, 2, 1 (for you math nerds, you need to do the factorial of the day that you missed).
This is going to be tough, but I think the payoff will be pretty awesome.
So, who’s going to join me in this?

So this is absolutely absurd, but here I am on day 3, and I can feel it in my arms and my abs. That can’t be right, can it? Day 3? Is that how out of shape I am?
Ditto. I woke up this morning and thought to myself, “I must have slept funny because two burpees cannot have destroyed my shoulders.”
Three done for today. Probably should have stretched a bit before hand as my knees, wrists and ankles all cracked on the first one.
:)
Don’t worry, you can totally get sore in muscles you work all the time just by working them differently. It’s not related to your fitness level!
I’m in! I’m joining in somewhat late, I guess, but what difference does it make as long as I get in my 100!
And now I’m terrified.
Why is there no ‘afraid’ option on the mood thingy?:)
I might sort of join you, because I already have a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday ‘fitness’ schedule and could easily schedule it in.
The more the merrier!
I did Day 2 immediately after I got out of bed, so there would be no wussying out.
WoO-hoo! I’m about to do my four as soon as I talk myself into getting out of my warm bed.
These are a little different than the ones I was taught. Challenge accepted. My pushups could use the kick in the pants! (There will be none of that fancy gymnastical stuff at the end though. That’s just mean.)
Ugh, I’m in. Â Between this and re-starting C25K, I can feel like I’m modeling healthy behavior in front of the kid. I second PoM’s designation of this as “terrifying and awful.”
I can’t believe I’m saying yes to this. But I’m a joiner, what can I say?
Yay! You may regret it at times, but in the end, you’ll be happy that it’s over with!
As someone who just spent far too much money on their feet (oh hell Mr Podiatrist and Shoe Clinic) so they can get fit, I’d better get into this!
I am totally in! Burpee done!
I did burpees yesterday and felt like I was going to collapse, and said to myself, I need to do more of these so they stop making me feel like death.
In other words, challenge accepted.
Are any of you Persephoneers on Fitocracy? If so, wanna be friends? I’m niemi086 over there.
Oh man, I am so in! Just today I got chastised for having such low upper body strength.
Destroy the chastizer. Do burpees!
I’m psyched with the response! I’m on day three b/c my Cross-fit gym started the challenge on the first.
I’m going to check in with y’all periodically to see how you’re doing! 2012 is going to be the year of awesome arms!
*If anyone form Keystone Cross-Fit is checking this out…Hello there!!!
This terrifies me. But I’m going to give it a try. o_o
My fitness class was doing this! But I only did it with the class. I will join in. I’ll call today day 3 because it’s the 3rd so it’s easier to keep track, I think. I just worry about the time commitment when we get into like, 75 of them. Haha.
I like that you can split it up during the day, though. So on Day 75, I can do like ten an hour when I’m not at work and feel OK about it.
True. Good point. And we’ll probably get faster, ish, over time.
I’m in!
I’m going to incorporate them into my workout days.
I am currently working on getting to 100 pushups (not doing the 100-pushup-program challenge, since I am a beast who did 46 pushups the other day [not that I’m bragging. Okay, so maybe I am a little bit] and bulk up quickly), so while I will probably not do the 100-day-burpee-challenge… this definitely makes me think that I should integrate them into my pushup sets.
This looks terrifying and awful.
I guess I’m in.
My thoughts exactly.
I’m calling them squat-thrusts though cause I can’t even with the burpees.Â
I’m totally doing the modified one that the chick in pink does at 0:45.
Aaaaand, Day 1: DONE.
Done deal. I love this idea. Simple and easy to implement into life. I’ll go do mine right now.
… So much jiggling. My boyfriend will love to watch this. :/
We will have a weekly thread about this? Or should we keep checking back here?
I’m going to check in with everyone once a week to check in and see how everyone is doing/offer encouragement.
Perfect. I like to be kept in check.
Did my two burpees today. I don’t think I’m jumping very high. Must try to “burst” off the ground or whatever personal trainers call it.
